Adam Gemili: A Brief Biography

Adam Gemili is a British sprinter born on 6th October 1993. He hails from London in England. Gemili specializes and represents his nation internationally in 100m and 200m sprints.

Background:

Adam Gemili was born to Sacha Gemili and Az Gemili. He belongs of Iranian and Moroccan descent, where her father is from Iran and her mother is from Morocco.

As a child, Gemili was keenly interested in pursuing football like every other kid in England. In 2001, he joined the youth team/club of Chelsea as a defender, where he had spent till 2008. Gemili joined Barking and Dagenham College in East London and did a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sports.

In 2010, Gemili traveled to Blackheath and Bromley club, a local athletics club, to foster his pace. The coaches at the club were amazed by his athleticism and urged him to pursue athletics rather than football. At the behest of the club coaches, he decided to give up football and pursue athletics. By that time, he had just loaned Thurrock from Dagenham and Redbridge for a year.

In 2012, Gemili permanently left football and became full-time athletics. He is an alumnus of the University of East London, where did Sports and Exercise Science with Human Biology.

Rise to Glory:

Adam Gemili got his international break at the age of 18 when he won two Silver medals in 100m and 4x100m at the European Junior Athletics Championships in 2011. That year, he won the 200m national title by clocking 20.98s at the National Athletic League Finals.

In 2012, Gemili won his first senior national medal by winning Silver in 100m by clocking 10.29 seconds, 0.04s behind Gold-medalist Dwain Chambers at the British Athletics Championships. Two years later, in 2014, he won Silver in 200m at the national championships.

In 2016, Gemili won his first senior national title in 200m and was selected for Olympic trials to secure a spot on the Great Britain Olympic Team for the Rio Olympics. In 2019, for the first time, he won two medals in a single national championship by winning Gold in 200m and Silver in 100m.

Adam Jamili is recorded as the 66th fastest runner in the 200 meters (19.97s), while he is ranked 105th among the world's fastest runners in the 100 meters (9.97s).

Major Achievements:

Adam Gemili first caught the limelight in 2012 when won the Gold medal in 100m at the World Junior Athletics Championships. That year, in August, he made his Olympics debut at the London Olympics, where he finished 3rd in the 200m semi-final and therefore not qualifying for the final. The following year, Gemili bagged 100m and 4x100m relay titles at the European U-23 Athletics Championships in Tampere, Finland.

In 2014, Gemili won the 100m and 4x100m titles at the European Athletics Championships. He and his Great Britain relay team would go to clinch two European 4x100m titles (2016 and 2018). At the 2014 Commonwealth in Glasgow, Scotland, he represented England and made it to the podium finish with two Silver medals in 100m and 4x100m relay.

In 2016, Adam Gemili competed at the Rio Olympics, where he finished 4th in 200m by clocking 20.12 seconds. He lost a Bronze-medal to France’s Christophe Lemaitre by three hundredths of seconds. The following, he was part of the Great Britain relay team that became world champions in the 4x100m relay at the World Athletics Championships.

Adam Gemili will be competing in his third Olympics at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and is a medal hope for Great Britain in the 100m and 4x100m relay.
