Amit Rohidas: A Brief Biography
Amit Rohidas is a field hockey player who plays for the Indian National Hockey team. Born in the Sundergarh district of Odisha, the 25 yr old plays as a defender. The stalwart defender has been a part of the National team for more than 6 years and is widely regarded for his drag flicking skills.
Background
Amit Rohidas was born on the 10th of May 1993. He developed a keen interest in hockey in when he was 10 years old. He soon started playing in his village, Saunamara in the Sundergarh district. He later joined the Panposh Sports Hostel in Rourkela to hone his hockey skills.
Debut
While he made his junior team debut back in 2009, he made it to the senior squad in 2013 for the Asia Cup held in Ipoh. He gave a decent performance in the tournament and the Sardar Singh led team won Silver.
Rise to Glory
The 25 year old has had a highly successful career so far. He has been part of many wins for the Indian national team. It was his excellent performances in the junior level which helped him achieve that. His real transformation started in 2004.
His constantly good performances in the domestic circuit landed him in the 8th edition of the under-18 Asia Cup held in Myanmar in November 2009 in which India finished 5th. His drag flicks earned him the title of star player of the tournament as he scored 7 goals.He kept giving astonishing performances in many important tournaments. He also featured in the Silver winning squad in the Sultan of Johor Cup in Bahru, Malaysia.
Amit Rohidas led the 18-member Indian junior men squad in the European tour from May 23-June 5 in preparation for the World Cup which was held in 2013 in India.
Hockey India soon announced a strong 18-member junior men's squad, led by midfielder Manpreet Singh, for the FIH Junior Men's World Cup held at Delhi from December 5 to 15 where the promising defender was named as Manpreet's deputy where India came 10th.
Low Points
The 25 year old soon started to be regarded as the next big thing in Indian hockey. However things didn’t go as planned. He had to wait for three long years before being called to the national side.
He was never a regular for the national team despite giving satisfactory performances.Due to heavy competition among defenders, his India appearances dried up after 2015.However he was always confident that his hard work won’t go unnoticed for long.
Club Career
Rohidas was a regular feature in his club games which he played for his hostel in Odisha. He represented them in many state and district level tournaments and still plays for them whenever he has time.
His real club career started in 2013 in the Hockey India League where he was fetched by the Ranchi Rhinos, who eventually won the title that year. He played with legendary players such as Moritz Fuertse, Ashley Jackson and Austin Smith. He later played for his home team, the Kalinga Lancers and was a part of the team which became champions in 2017.
He has given constantly good performances throughout his HIL career. It was his performances in the HIL which helped him claw his way back to the national team.
