Anshu Malik: A Brief Biography
Anshu Malik is an Indian woman wrestler born on 5th August 2001. She hails from Nidani village of Jind district in Haryana. Anshu specializes in Freestyle wrestling and represents India internationally in the 57kg category.
Anshu Malik- Early Life, Family & Background
Anshu Malik was born to Dharamveer Malik and his wife. She belongs to a family of wrestlers, where her father and her uncle are former grapplers. Her father represented India at the World Cadet Wrestling Championships in 1995 and her uncle, Pawan Malik, was a South Asian Games Gold-Medalist. Her brother, Shubham, is a national-level wrestler.
Anshu tried her hands at wrestling at the behest of his father, Dharamveer who wanted both his children to pursue a career in the sport. She would often escort her brother, Shubham, to the wrestling arena in their village. In 2012, Anshu began to pursue the sport seriously and trained under Jagdish Sheoren, who has produced more than 20 international wrestlers.
Apart from wrestling, Anshu was good at studies and performed academically well in her school. She completed her school education at the Chaudhary Bharat Singh Memorial School.

After receiving training from Jagdish Sheoren, Anshu's wrestling career began taking shape. She had participated and won medals in state-level junior wrestling competitions.
In 2016, Anshu won her first national Gold medal in wrestling at the National School Games. That year, she bagged the Gold medal at the Cadet National Wrestling Championships. She’d go on to defend her Cadet National title twice in 2017 and 2018.
Anshu became the Junior National Champion in the 57 kg category at the Junior National Wrestling Championships in 2018. A year later, she bagged her first senior national Gold medal at the Senior National Wrestling Championships in Jalandhar, Punjab.
In 2020, Anshu won the Silver medal in her senior international debut at the Ranking Series Matteo Pellicone in Italy. In January 2021, she bagged the Gold medal in the 57 kg category at the 23rd Senior Women National Wrestling Championships.
Anshu Malik Achievements
Anshu Malik won her first international medal in 2016 by clinching Silver at the Asian Junior Wrestling Championships in Taiwan. That year, she bagged the Bronze medal at the World Cadet Wrestling Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia.
In 2017, Anshu received her international breakthrough in her career when she won the Gold medal in the 60kg category at the World Cadet Wrestling Championships in Athens, Greece. The following year, she won a Silver medal in the 59 kg category at the World Junior Wrestling Championships in Travna, the Czech Republic, and a Bronze in the 60kg category at the World Cadet Wrestling Championships in Zagreb, Serbia.
In 2019, she became the Asian Junior Champion in the 59kg category at the Asian Wrestling Championships. In 2020, Anshu settled for the Bronze medal in the 57kg category at the Asian Wrestling Championships. Later that year, in December, she bagged the Silver medal at the Individual Wrestling World Cup in Belgrade, Serbia.
In April 2021, Anshu became the youngest Indian woman wrestler to qualify for the Olympics after she booked her berth in the women’s 57 kg category by reaching the final at the Asian Olympic Qualifiers in Almaty, Kazakhstan. She is the 5th Indian wrestler to make it to the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
