Auston Matthews: A Brief Biography

Auston Matthews
Auston Matthews

Auston Matthews, born on September 17, 1997, is an American professional ice hockey center and alternate captain for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League (NHL). Although he was born in San Ramon, California, Matthews and his family moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, when he was very young.

Matthews joined the USA Hockey National Team Development Program within the United States Hockey League (USHL) and later played for the ZSC Lions in the Swiss National League. Matthews became the first American to be selected with the first overall pick since Patrick Kane in 2007 when he was chosen by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

Matthews made an unforgettable mark in his NHL debut by becoming the first player in modern NHL history to score four goals in his rookie season in 2016-17, scoring 40 goals and setting the Maple Leafs' rookie record.

He became the second rookie for the season's 2004-05 lockout to reach the 40-goal milestone, along with Alexander Ovechkin. Additionally, Matthews has become the fourth teen in NHL history to accomplish this feat. His excellent overall performance earned him the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL's top rookie for the season.

Matthews agreed to a four-year contract extension with an AAV of $13.25 million on August 23, 2023. He got his eighth career hat trick in the Maple Leafs' 6-5 shootout victory over the Canadiens in their home opener to start the 2023–24 campaign.

The Maple Leafs defeated the Wild 7-4, and Matthews added to this the next game by scoring his ninth career hat trick. He is the first player to record back-to-back hat tricks at the start of the season since Alex Ovechkin in 2017.
