Brittney Reese: A Brief Biography

Brittney Reese is an American track and field athlete born on 9th September 1986. She is a native of Gulfport city of Mississippi in the United States. Brittney specializes and represents the USA internationally in Long Jump.

Background:

Brittney Reese was born to David Reese and Carla Young Reese. She was born in Inglewood city of California and brought up in Gulfport city of Mississippi. Brittney has two sisters, Brandy Reese and Kimyata Reese.

Brittney had a keen interest in athletics at a young age. She attended Gulfport High School, where she became 3-time High School Champion in Long Jump. In 2004, after graduating from high school, Brittney joined the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Perkinston. She was a member of the MGCCC women’s basketball team.

In 2006, Brittney quit MGCCC and moved to the University of Mississippi, where she competed for Ole Miss in Long Jump and High Jump at the SEC Championships and NCAA Outdoor Championships (2007-2008). In 2008, she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Mississippi.

Brittney Reese is working as an assistant track and field coach at the San Diego Mesa College in California.

Rise to Glory:

Brittney Reese first broke into the national limelight in 2007 after she won her first senior national title in the Long Jump at the US Track and Field Championships. That year, she clinched her first NCAA Long Jump title at the NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Championships.

In 2008, Brittney clinched the Long Jump title and a Bronze medal in the High Jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships. That year, in June, she defended her NCAA Long Jump Outdoor title at the NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Championships.

At the 2009 US Track and Field Championships, Brittney Reese won her second senior national title in the Long Jump. She went on to win six national championships medals, including 5 Gold medals (2010, 2011, 2014, and 2019) and two Silver medals (2015 and 2017) in the Long Jump. In 2018, Brittney won her Long Jump Indoor national title at the US Indoor Championships.

Brittney Reese is the World No.4 Women Long Jumper with 1302 points. She holds a national record in the Long Jump (7.23m).

Major Achievements:

Brittney Reese made her international debut at the 2007 World Athletics Championships, where she finished 8th in the Long Jump with a leap of 6.60m. In 2008, she made her Olympics debut at the Beijing Olympics and was placed 4th in the Long Jump by leaping 6.76m, 0.03m behind Bronze-medalist Chelsea Hammond of Jamaica.

In 2009, Brittney was crowned as World Champion in the Long Jump (7.10m) at the World Athletics Championships. She would go on to clinch three Worlds titles in the Long Jump in 2011, 2013, and 2017. At the 2012 London Olympics, Brittney became the Olympic Champion in the Long Jump by jumping at a distance of 7.12m.

At the World Indoor Athletics Championships, Brittney took home three titles (2010, 2012, and 2016) and a Silver medal (2018) in the Long Jump. In 2016, she won the Silver medal in the Long Jump (7.15m) at the Rio Olympics. In the Diamond League, Brittney had won two consecutive titles (2010 and 2011) and earned 12 circuit wins in the Long Jump between 2010 and 2017.

Brittney Reese will look to secure her spot on the U.S Olympic Team for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics via US Olympic Trials and shall be one of the strong contenders to win a Gold medal in the Long Jump.
