Dalilah Muhammad: A Brief Biography

Dalilah Muhammad is an American track and field born on 7th February 1991. She is a native of Queens city of New York in the United States. Dalilah is a Hurdling specialist and represents the USA internationally in 400m Hurdles.

Background:

Dalilah Muhammad was born to Nadirah Muhammad and Askia Muhammad. She belongs to an American-Muslim family residing in the neighbourhood of Bayside in the Queens city of New York. She has a brother, Hassan Muhammad, and a sister, Jamillah Muhammad.

Dalilah had an athletic interest at a young age. She attended Benjamin N. Cardozo High School in Bayside, where she became the 2007 NSAF Indoor Champion and 2008 New York State Meet Champion in 400m Hurdles. She had also competed in 200m, 400m, 800m Sprints, Relays, and High Jump for her high school.

In 2008, after graduating from high school, Dalilah joined the University of Southern California on a sports scholarship, where she competed for USC Trojans at the Pac-12 Championships and NCAA Outdoor Championships (2009 and 2012).

In 2012, Dalilah Muhammad graduated with a degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern California.

Rise to Glory:

Dalilah Muhammad's first career break came in 2005 when she won her first national medal by winning Bronze in 400m Hurdles at the USA Junior Track and Field Championships. The following, she won her first national title in 400m Hurdles at the USATF U18 Olympic Championships.

Dalilah broke into the national limelight after she won the 400m Hurdles title at the 2007 World Youth Athletics Championships. In 2009, she made her NCAA debut and won the Bronze medal in 400m Hurdles at the NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Championships. That year, Dalilah won the 400m Hurdles junior national title, followed by a Gold medal at the Pan American Junior Championships.

In 2013, Dalilah clinched her first senior national title in 400m Hurdles at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She would go on to win two more US national titles in 2018 and 2019.

Dalilah Muhammad is the World No.2 Women 400m Hurdler with 1420 points and holds the world record for 400m Hurdles with the timing of 52.16s.



Major Achievements:

Dalilah Muhammad made her professional international debut at the 2013 World Athletics Championships, where she won the Silver medal in 400m Hurdles by clocking 54.09s. The following year, she competed at the Diamond League and finished 7th in the Doha leg of 400m Hurdles in Qatar.

Dailah made her Olympics debut at the 2016 Rio Olympics and was crowned as Olympic Champion in 400m Hurdles with the timing of 53.13 seconds. In 2017, she won her first Worlds medal by winning Silver in 400m Hurdles at the World Athletics Championships.

At the 2019 World Athletics Championships, Dalilah Muhammad took home a Gold medal double in 400m Hurdles (52.16s) and 4x400m Relay (3:18.92s). In the Diamond League, she had won two consecutive 400m Hurdles titles in 2017 and 2018 and earned 8 circuit wins in 2016 (2), 2017 (1), 2018 (3), and 2019 (2).

Dalilah Muhammad is eyeing to secure her spot on US Olympic Team for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and will look to defend her 400m Hurdles Olympic title.
