Darrell Lee Waltrip is an American motorsports analyst, former national television broadcaster, and stock car driver. Waltrip drove the No. 11 Chevrolet for Junior Johnson. He is known for winning the Cup Series (then Winston Cup Series) championship three times in 1981, 1982, and 1985. Waltrip began racing in 1972 and retired in 2000 as a driver for NASCAR.
Winning a whopping 84 races in the Cup Series, Waltrip is known for winning the 1989 Daytona 500. He also won the Coca-Cola 600 (formerly known as the World 600) five times in 1978, 1979, 1985, 1988, and 1989. Having such a high-performing career, Waltrip was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2012.

Darrell Waltrip’s Early Life
Waltrip started racing Go-karts at age 12 and participated in his first-ever stock car race at age 16. Born and brought up in Owensboro, Kentucky, Waltrip and his father Leroy Waltrip built a 1936 Chevrolet coupe and took it to a local dirt track in their hometown. The Hall of Famer slammed the wall and damaged the coupe. Waltrip started racing on asphalt afterward.
Waltrip used to drive a car called “Big 100” built by Harry Pedley, at the Kentucky Motor Speedway and Ellis Raceway. Waltrip’s performance caught the attention of Nashville driver P.B. Crowell. Crowell encouraged Waltrip to race at the Fairgrounds Speedway, at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds in Nashville where he won two track championships in 1970 and 1973. Waltrip debuted in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series at the Winston 500, at Talladega, Alabama, on May 7, 1972.
