Dina Asher-Smith is a British woman track and field athlete born on 4th December 1995. She hails from Orpington city of Greater London in the United Kingdom. Dina specializes in sprinting and represents Great Britain internationally in 100m and 200m sprints.
Background
Dina Asher-Smith was born to Winston Asher-Smith and Julie Asher-Smith. Her parents are originally from Jamaica but settled in Orpington city of Greater London, where Dina was born and brought up. Dina has ancestral roots in Jamaica.
At a very young age, Dina had a keen interest in pursuing athletics. In 2003, she joined Blackheath and Bromley Athletics Club and trained under John Blackie. Under the tutelage of Blackie, she received initial success in her athletics career with the U-15 title in 200m at the English School Championships, which she won in U-17 (2011) and U-20 (2013) categories.
Apart from athletics, Dina was good at academics as well. She enrolled at the prestigious King’s College London after passing A-level exams and graduated with honours in BA History in 2017. Dina is a football fan and supports Manchester United F.C.
Rise to Glory
Dina Asher-Smith's first career break came in 2011 when she bagged 200m and 4x100m relay titles at the Commonwealth Youth Games. The following year, at the World Junior Athletics Championships, she finished 7th in the 200m sprint.
In 2013, Dina became the European junior champion in 200m and 4x100 relay at the European Junior Athletics Championships. That year, she helped the Great Britain relay team to win a 4x100m relay title at the London Grand Prix. The following year, Dina was crowned as 100m world junior champion at the World Junior Championships. At the 2014 British Indoor Athletics Championships, she won the 200m national title.
At the 2014 British Indoor Athletics Championships, she won the 200m national title. In 2015, Dina Asher-Smith became the 100m national champion at the British Athletics Championships. She has accumulated four national titles in 100m (3) and 200m (1) sprints.
Dina Asher-Smith holds the national record in 100m and 200m with the timing of 10.83 seconds and 21.88 seconds, respectively.
Major Achievements
Dina Asher-Smith made her professional debut at the 2013 World Athletics Championships, where she helped the Great Britain relay team to win a Bronze medal. The following year, she was due to compete at the European Athletics Championships after qualifying for the 200m event but pulled out of the competition due to a hamstring injury.
In 2015, Dina won the Silver medal in the 60 meters sprint at the European Indoor Athletics Championships. That year, in August, she competed at the World Championships, where she finished 5th in 200m sprint and 4th in 4x100m relay.
In 2016, Dina was crowned as a 200m European Champion and also won the Silver medal in the 4x100m relay at the European Athletics Championships. In August, she made her Olympics debut at the Rio Olympics and helped the GB relay team to win the Bronze medal in 4x100m, while she finished 5th in 200m race. The following year, at the World Athletics Championships, Dina made it to the podium finish with a Silver medal in the 4x100m relay.
Dina Asher-Smith represented England at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, where she won a Gold medal and a Bronze in 4x100m relay and 200m sprint, respectively. That year, Dina swept Gold medals in 100m, 200m, and 4x100m at the European Athletics Championships, followed by two Silver medals in 200m and 4x100m relay at the Continental Cup.
In 2019, Dina became a 200m World Champion, alongside two Silver medals in 100m and 4x100m relay at the World Championships. That year, she was crowned as Diamond League champion in 200m.
Dina Asher-Smith will compete at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and is one of the strong contenders for the Gold medals in 100m and 200m sprints.
