Emma Coburn: A Brief Biography
Emma Coburn is an American track and field athlete born on 19th October 1990. She hails from the Crested Butte town of Colorado in the United States. Emma is a Steeplechase specialist and represents the USA internationally in 3000m Steeplechase.
Background:
Emma Coburn was born to Bill Coburn and Annie Coburn. She was born in Boulder in Colorado and brought up in her hometown of Crested Butte. She has three siblings, Joe Coburn, Willie Coburn, and Gracie Coburn.
Emma sowed her interest in athletics at a young age. She attended Crested Butte High School, where she began to pursue a track and field career in Steeplechase. In 2008, before graduating from high school, she won the first medal of her career by winning Silver in the 2000m Steeplechase.
After graduating from high school, Emma Coburn joined the University of Colorado and became a member of an athletics team Colorado Buffaloes, whom she had represented at the NCAA Championships (2009-2013) and US National Championships (2011).
In 2013, Emma graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing from the University of Colorado. She has been married to Joe Bosshard, also her coach, since 2017. She has associated and volunteered with several NGOs including Living Journeys Cancer Foundation and Mountain Adventure Kids Camp.
Rise to Glory:
Emma Coburn’s first career break as a collegiate athlete came in 2011 when she won the Silver medal in 3000m Steeplechase at the NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Championships. The following year, she broke into the limelight after she clinched the national 3000m Steeplechase title at the USA Track and Field Championships.
In 2012, Emma won her second consecutive national title in 3000m Steeplechase and also qualified for the London Olympics. The following year, she won her first NCAA Outdoor title in 3000m Steeplechase while representing Colorado Buffaloes. In 2014, Emma took home the 3000m Steeplechase Silver at the British Athletics Grand Prix.
Between 2014 and 2019, Emma had bagged six consecutive national championships titles in the 3000m Steeplechase. In 2018, she won the Bronze medal in the 3000m Steeplechase at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Emma Coburn is the World No.2 Women 3000m Steeplechase with 1409 points. She holds the national record for 1200m in Distance Medley Relay (3:18.40s)
Major Achievements:
Emma Coburn made her first international appearance as a pro athlete in 2011 at the World Athletics Championships, where she finished 8th in the 3000m Steeplechase by clocking 9:51.40s. The following year, she made her Olympics debut at the London Olympics and was placed 8th in the 3000m Steeplechase final.
In 2014, representing the Americas, Emma won the Gold medal in 3000m Steeplechase at the IAAF Continental Cup. At the 2015 World Athletics Championships, she improved her position by finishing 5th in the 3000m Steeplechase with the timing of 9:21.78s.
At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Emma won her first Olympic medal by taking home Bronze in the 3000m Steeplechase with the timing of 9:07.63s. In 2017, she was crowned as World Champion in the 3000m Steeplechase by clocking 9:02.58s at the World Athletics Championships. The following year, Emma took home a Silver medal in 3000m Steeplechase at the 2019 Worlds.
Emma Coburn will look to secure her spot on the US Olympic Team for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics through US Olympic Qualifiers and shall be in contention to medal in the 3000m Steeplechase.
