He was born on November 7, 1994, in Baltimore, Maryland, and grew up in one of the city's roughest neighborhoods, Sandtown-Winchester. His rough upbringing was deeply influential in his life and career, and he had a motivation to start boxing as a way out of poverty.

Davis started his professional boxing career at 18 on February 22, 2013, in a fight against Desi Williams. He quickly made a name for himself, with most of his early victories coming via knockout. By 2017, Davis captured his first world title, the IBF Super Featherweight Championship, after defeating José Pedraza.
