Gilmar Biography

Gylmar dos Santos Neves or simply called as Gilmar (22 August 1930 – 25 August 2013) was a brazilian footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He was very agile and had excellent reflexes in shot stopping, he also gave his defenders immense amount of confidence.

Background

Gilmer started his career playing as a youth for club Jabaquara from Santos, later on he moved to Corinthians in 1951 and won the state champion in the year 1951, 1952 and 1954.

Gilmer made his first senior club debut in 1951 for team Corinthians, he had total of 486 appearances in a span of ten years.

Gilmer’s debut for Santos came in the year 1961 and though he won many accolades as a player here, he really grew as an amazing goalkeeper playing majority of his career with Corinthians.

Rise to Glory

Gilmer signed for Santos in 1961, this was an epic move as he became the part of a legendary team with players like Pelé, Pepe, Zito, Mengálvio, Lima, Coutinho and other remarkable players.

Gilmer’s contribution in the Santos team was tremendous, with him between the goal posts it was extremely difficult for the opposition to score goals.

Santos was considered the best team of that era who absolutely dominated their reign by winning five Sao Paulo State Championships in 1962, 1964, 1965, 1967 and 1968, five National Championships in year 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964 and 1965.

Apart from this they also won two Libertadores Cups in years 1962 and 1963 and two Intercontinental Cups in 1962 against Eusebio's Benfica and in the year 1963 against Milan.

Gilmer’s international career was no different, he had 104 international caps and had only conceded a total of 95 goals. He was the first team player for three consecutive World Cups, between
