Joe Hendry: A Brief Biography

Joe Hendry is a Scottish Professional Wrestler. Signed to TNA, Hendry also makes appearances on WWE’s NXT brand since 2024 and is one of the few wrestlers to make cross-brand appearances under their current working arrangement. Before professional wrestling, Hendry was also an amateur wrestler.

Early Life and Amateur Wrestling

Joseph Samuel Hendry is the full name of Joe Hendry. He was born on May 1, 1998, in Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom. He has been a combat athlete since a very young age and holds a black belt in Judo. Hendry is the nephew of Drew Hendry, a Scottish politician who has been serving in the House of Commons. Joe Hendry graduated with a degree in marketing and business.

At the age of 26, Hendry decided to switch from Judo to Amateur Wrestling, while also making appearances in professional wrestling. In freestyle wrestling, he won the British Senior National Championship in 2017 and then went on to represent his country at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, but was eliminated in the Round of 16. Later that year, he won the British Senior National Championship in Greco-Roman Wrestling.

Independent Circuit (2013 - 2023)

Joe Hendry started training at the Source Wrestling School under the tutelage of Killian Dain, Mikey Whiplash, Robbie Brookside, and Marty Jones. His official debut was at the Scottish Wrestling Alliance at SWA Battlezone in a 30-man Battle Royal in October 2013. Soon, he became a regular at the Insane Championship Wrestling, while this period also marked his beginnings in the Amateur Wrestling category.

He won the ICW Tag Team Championship alongside Davey Boy in July 2016 but lost the titles back to Polo Promotions two months later. Hendry continued wrestling for ICW until July 2019 when he lost a match and was forced to leave the company. Joe Hendry entered the Discovery Wrestling scene in 2014. He faced off against various established wrestlers. In October 2019, he the Y Division Championship holding it for a record 1,280 days. He lost the Championship in April 2023 and returned to Discovery Wrestling just two months later, and has since made sporadic appearances there.

Hendry also wrestled for New Generation Wrestling (NGW) where he formed a tag team called Team Scotland with Lionheart and Kid Fite. They won the NGW Tag Team Championship in 2016. He then moved on to WhatCulture Pro Wrestling (WCPW) where he managed to win the WCPW Championship but eventually lost it to Marty Scurll in a triple threat match. Hendry also dipped his toes into World of Sport Wrestling (WOS) in 2018.

Ring of Honor (2016, 2018 - 2022)

Joe Hendry made sporadic appearances in Ring of Honor in 2016 before signing with the company and taking on a bigger role in 2018. He soon dropped the status of free agent and became a member of the ROH roster. He participated in various matches throughout the year, including the Honor Re-United tournament. He teamed with Dalton Castle for a while. ROH went on hiatus in 2020 due to the pandemic, but Hendry returned in 2021 and continued wrestling for them until Tony Khan purchased the company and it was merged with All Elite Wrestling. His last match was a loss to his former partner, Dalton Castle.

Impact Wrestling / TNA Wrestling (2018 - 2019, 2022 - Present)

In 2018, Joe Hendry made his debut in Impact Wrestling in a love triangle storyline with Grado and Katarina. He then feuded with Eli Drake, winning their first encounter but ultimately losing the second due to Grado's involvement. The situation escalated with Katarina turning heel on Grado, confessing her feelings for Hendry. However, Hendry rejected her advances, siding with Grado. Shortly after, Hendry lost his final match for Impact Wrestling against Murder Clown. His stint with the promotion ended in February 2019.

Three years later, Hendry made his return to Impact Wrestling after leaving Ring of Honor. He returned in September, competed in the Bound for Glory gauntlet, and by October, captured his first title, the Impact Digital Media Championship, defeating Brian Myers. His reign even surpassed Matt Cardona's for the longest championship run and lost it to Kenny King in July, ending his reign at 266 days.

Hendry's 2024 has been even more remarkable. His theme song composed by Hendry himself, "I Believe In Joe Hendry," became a viral sensation, reaching top spots on the UK music charts. In July, he secured a spot in the upcoming six-way elimination match for the TNA World Championship.

WWE (2014, 2024)

In 2014, Joe Hendry had a one-and-a-half-minute mic time as the Russian diplomat alongside Rusev and Lana. In June 2024, Hendry made a surprise appearance in a 25-man Battle Royal on WWE NXT. It was revealed that he joined the match while still being signed to TNA. In July, he teamed up with Trick Williams to defeat Ethan Page and Shawn Spears in a tag team match.
