Johnny Herrera: A Brief Biography
Johnny Cristian Herrera Munoz, popularly known as Johnny Herrera, is a Chilean professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper in the Chile national team since a very long period.
He has played for some popular clubs during the course of his career, some of them are - Corinthians, Everton and Audax Italiano. He is currently associated to Universidad de Chile as their goalkeeper captain.
Background
Born on 9 May 1981 in Angol commune of southern Chile, Herrera began his youth career while playing for a renowned club of the country, Universidad de Chile, at the age of 14. He was trained in the youth setup of the cub for the next 4 years.
Senior career
In 1999, he made his professional career debut for Universidad de Chile. His tenure continued for 6 years, during this he appeared in 123 games and made some terrific saves for the club. He was a part of the 12th title of the club in the Chilean Primera.
In 2006, Herrera switched to a Brazilian club, Corinthians.However due to his inconsistent performance, he was taken into the playing squad only 9 times.
Herrera signed for Everton in the following season and was instrumental in their journey to the title of Tornea Apertura. He overall played 60 games for the club.
In 2008, he went to Audax Italiano for a 2 year deal. He made 91 appearances for the club.
In 2011, Herrera went back to his parent club - Universidad de Chile. He was chosen as goalkeeper and he soon became the spear point of their crusade in Tornea Apertura 2012 and Copa Chile Cup 2012.
Rise to glory
Herrera’s first official goal was a penalty kick which came against Peru’s Real Garcilaso in a 1–0 Copa Libertadores group stage win. He again helped his club to win the Copa Chile final against rivals Colo-Colo in the shootout, where he saved a penalty and scored the winning goal.
International career
He was first called for national duty in the year 2000 when he was a youth as he represented Chile in the Olympics. He was also a part of U20 FIFA Youth World Cup in 2001 and FIFA World Cup 2014.
In 2017, he was called up for the Confederation Cup, where Chile did gave a fascinating performance as they finished as runner-ups after being defeated 1–0 by Germany in the final. But Herrera couldn’t play a single game ahead of Claudio Bravo.
