Early Life and Career
Joshua Culibao was born into a Filipino family as the youngest of four siblings, with a mother from Boracay and a father from Pampanga, he was given the nickname "Kuya" by his teammates at the Sydney-based Igor MMA, as he addressed everyone in the gym with the Filipino term of endearment. He started training in taekwondo during his childhood but shifted to mixed martial arts during his teenage years as a way to lose weight. Before joining the UFC, he worked full-time as an electrician, putting in over 40 hours a week, while still training.

He continued to win his next two fights in the Urban Fight Night promotion, first through a majority decision against Brad Shortland and then via TKO against Simon Arentz. He also competed in the Hex Fight Series and won the HEX Featherweight Championship against Raphael Berthet, which he successfully defended against Jordan Cameron. After one fight in the Urban Fight Night, he won the DFC Featherweight Championship against Rodolfo Marques with a head kick and ground and pound. He then captured the Superfight MMA Featherweight championship by defeating Josh Payne in the first round via TKO.
