Katherine Legge is among the pioneering women of the sport who have made their mark in racing. She has raced in various motorsports events and even tested a Formula 1 car. Legge is a part-time IndyCar and IMSA sportscar championship competitor and is also the face of the Girls on Track initiative by FIA. She currently works on the training and development of young women who want to pursue a career in motorsports. Legge is also a promoter of STEM subjects as she believes that science is the basis of every racer. Katherine Legge is a part of the Women in Motorsport Commission of the FIA.

Katherine Legge was a challenger in the 2024 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb competing in the Time Attack 1 category. She drove the Acura Integra Type S DE5 placing 27th in the challenge and 5th in her division. Legge is the record holder of the fastest qualifying effort made by a woman in an Indianapolis 500 race. She achieved the record in 2023, returning to IndyCar after a decade for her third attempt at the Indianapolis 500.

Katherine Legge Early Life & Career

Katherine Legge was a part of many development open-wheel racing series in England. She participated in Formula Three, Formula Renault, and Formula Ford increasing her experience in open-wheel racing. In 2000, Legge became the first woman in a Zetec challenge to win the pole position. She created a bigger name for herself in 2001 after she broke Kimi Raikkonen’s lap record to get the pole position. Legge moved to the United States in 2004 to pursue her racing career further. She had a rocky phase at the time as she couldn’t finance her racing career further.

Legge visited the UK office of Cosworth to meet the esteemed Kevin Kalkhoven. Initially, he was uninterested in hiring Legge. However, when she talked to his daughter, she convinced her to get a chance to meet the Cosworth boss. Kalkhoven went on to sponsor her for three races in the 2005 Toyota Atlantic Championship with Polestar Motor Racing. Legge went on to win the series opener race and finished third in the championship with three wins and five podiums to her name. She became the first woman to test a Formula 1 car in 2005 since Sarah Fisher in 2002. Legge tested Minardi’s Formula 1 car at Vallelunga and clocked 27 laps during two days of testing. She had a best lap time of 1:21.176.

Legge joined IndyCar racing in 2012 with Dragon Racing. She was unable to race a full season due to the restriction of one car per race lease agreement. Legge claimed a best finish of 9th place in the 2012 MAVTV 500 IndyCar World Championships at Auto Club Speedway. She has run 19 IndyCar races throughout her four-year career as of November 2024.
