Kothajit Khadangbam: A Brief Biography
Kothajit Singh Khandangbam was born on 17th August 1992 in Imphal, Manipur. He has been playing as a midfielder for the Indian National hockey team. He has played 174 matches and scored 5 goals for the Nation so far.
Background
He started his Hockey Career from the Indian K.D Babu Singh sub-junior invitation hockey at Lucknow in 2001. He started his Hockey career at the age of 9 and played in the under-14 category.
Debut
He represented his state (Manipur) for the first time in the 21st ONGC Nehru sub-junior hockey tournament (U-15) in the year 2003.
He again represented the state team (Manipur) in the 52nd National School Games (U-17) in the year 2006.
He did not stop there, he took one step forward and represented his nation for the first time in 2nd U-16 Boys hockey team (Boys Asia cup) that was held in Dhaka in the year 2007-08.
Rise to glory
He was a part of the Indian National team when they won the silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, and he was also a part of the Indian team when they bagged the gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea. He was the only goal scorer in the regular time which helped the Indian team to draw the match as 1-1 against Pakistan and India subsequently won the match in the penalty shootout with a 4-2 aggregate.
From playing in poorly equipped local playfield to being qualified for Olympics. He has struggled against all odds.
Career growth
He has represented the Manipur team when they won the 11th sub-junior National Hockey Tournament in the year 2005. Since then he had played in many Tournaments and improved his skills day by day.
Even though he performed well in the London Olympic qualifiers held in New Delhi, he could not make it to the last 16 squad. All these disappointments faded away when he had become the vice-captain for the Indian junior team for the 2nd Sultan of Johor Cup. He also acquired his place in the senior team for the two tournaments in Australia.
He made an impact by selling him out at the price of $33000 for Ranchi Rhinos in the hockey Indian league.
High points
He is known for his calm and composed play. He always let his stick to do the talking rather than his mouth. He has a classic touch in passing the ball, His air-ball through pass is one of his best skills.
