Maciej Makuszewski: A Brief Biography
Maciej Makuszewski is a Polish footballer, born on 29th September 1989 in Grajewo, Poland. Makuszewski plays mainly on the right wing in the playing eleven but has also been used as a left winger and as an attacking midfielder. Makuszewski prefers his right foot while playing and currently plies his trade for Polish giants, Lech Poznan and Poland National Football Team.
Background
Makuszewski started his youth career by playing for Wissa Szczuczyn. He remained there till 2002 when he signed for UKS SMS Lodz.
Makuszewski spent a majority of his youth career in the academy of UKS SMS Lodz. In the summer of 2008, he signed for Wigry Suwalki.
After spending a couple of seasons at Wigry Suwalki, Makuszewski moved to Jagiellona on a four-year deal. He had a fairly successful stint at Jagiellona on a personal level as he made regular appearances. He won the Polish Super Cup with Jagiellona as well.
On 6th September 2012, Makuszewski signed for Russian club Terek Grozny. He found it tough to get regular playing time during his time at Grozny and made only 11 appearances during the 2012-13 season.
He was loaned off to Polish club Lechia Gdansk at the start of next season.
Debut
Makuszewski made his debut for the Polish national side in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Denmark. Poland lost the game 0-4 as Makuszewski came on as a substitute during the second half.
Rise to Glory
Makuszewski had the most successful spell of his career at Lechia Gdansk. He made 16 appearances during the 2013-14 Ekstraklasa and scored three times for the Polish club.
As a result of his impressive performances, Lechia Gdansk used the option to buy the player at the end of the loan spell and brought him to the club on a permanent basis.
Makuszewski form continued during the 2014-15 season as well. He made 34 starts during the domestic league season and found the back of the net on six occasions. He played for Gdansk for another 20 matches in the next season before moving to Portuguese club Vitoria Setubal on a six-month loan deal.
Polish giants Lech Poznan signed Makuszewski at the start of the 2016-17 season on loan. He played 41 times in the season for Lech Poznan and helped them land the Polish Cup and the Polish Super Cup.
Low Points
Makuszewski was going through an impressive run of form when he suffered an injury in a game against Cracovia during the 2017-18 season. He had scored three times in the previous six matches. It was later revealed that Makuszewski had suffered a cruciate ligament rupture. The injury is a blow to Makuszewski’s chances of making it to the Polish 2018 FIFA World Cup squad.
Club Career
Makuszewski started his professional football career playing for UKS SMS Lodz in 2007. He moved to Wigry Suwalki after a year on a free transfer. In July 2010, Makuszewski signed for Jagiellona. He spent a couple of seasons at Jagiellona before moving Terek Grozny in Russia. After spending a further couple of seasons at Terek Grozny, he joined Lechia Gdansk on loan with an option to buy. Lechia bought him on a permanent basis in 2014. Makuszewski was loaned off to Portuguese club Vitoria Setubal for six months during the second half of the 2016-17 season. He spent the next season at Lech Poznan on loan before being to sold off to Poznan for £720,000.
