Mario Andretti is one of the best drivers to have graced motorsports. His achievements put him above the rest in both the highest open-wheel racing series. Andretti has won races in Formula 1, IndyCar, World Sportscar Championship, and NASCAR. He is one of the only three drivers to have claimed the achievement of winning a race in all four series. He is set to reappear in Formula 1 in 2026 with the newest team, Cadillac. Andretti will be a part of the board of directors for Cadillac in 2026. Mario Andretti is an accomplished IndyCar driver who has won the championship four times.

Andretti is the last American driver in the history of Formula 1 to win a race in Formula 1 as of November 2024. He has won races in IndyCar for nearly four decades. His family has been involved in motorsports for several generations. Andretti was born in the Kingdom of Italy and later migrated to the United States with his family. Andretti is currently the ambassador for the race track of Circuit of the Americas and promotes the United States Grand Prix of Formula 1.

Mario Andretti's Early Life & Career

Mario Andretti started competing in karting at 13, racing in the Formula Junior series in Ancona, Italy. Andretti used to park cars in the garage during his early years. Andretti and his brothers used to race together in the Limited Sportsman Class using a 1948 Hudson on which they worked together. Andretti progressed to the United States Auto Club series in 1965. He claimed his first victory in 1967. Andretti won three races in 1974 and four races in 1975 in the USAC series.

Andretti was a proficient driver who claimed victories and accomplishments in almost every motorsports category he raced in. He won the 1967 Daytona 500 race in the NASCAR Cup Series for Holman Moody. Andretti later joined the Formula 1 Racing series in 1975 competing full-time for seven years until 1981. Mario Andretti raced for some of the best teams in the series. Ferrari approached him as a potential replacement for Niki Lauda. Mario Andretti competed in 131 races claiming 12 wins and 19 podiums. He won the 1978 Formula 1 world championship with Lotus.

Mario Andretti joined IndyCar racing in 1964 and claimed his first victory at the 1965 Hoosier Grand Prix. His performance in the 1965 season earned him the IndyCar championship title with ten podiums and 3110 points throughout the season. Andretti went on to win four championships in the IndyCar series and earned many coveted achievements including wins at the Indianapolis 500. Mario Andretti has participated in 407 races over 31 years. He has won 52 races in the championship with 141 podium finishes.

Mario Andretti was born to Alvise and Rina Andretti. He has a twin brother named Aldo Andretti who was also involved in motorsports. His father was a farm administrator. His family was initially situated in Montona, Istria, Kingdom of Italy, where Andretti was born. In 1948, during the Istrian–Dalmatian exodus, his family moved away and ended up in a refugee camp in Lucca, Italy.
