Martin Rodriguez: A Brief Biography
Martin Rodriguez is a professional footballer from Chile who currently plays for UNAM, which is a club in the top division of Mexican football, Liga MX. Born on 5th August 1994, the attacking midfielder is known for his pace and exquisite technique. But what set him aparts is that despite having a penchant for going for goal, he is always aware of the options around him. The 23 year old was a part of the Chilean squad which reached the finals of the 2017 FIFA Federations cup.
Background
The prodigy wanted to begin his career playing for Universidad de Chile, one of the most prestigious clubs in Mexico. However, on account of his slight stature, he was turned down by the club. But Universidad de Chile’s loss became Huachipato’s gain who recognized Martin’s potential and accepted the 14 year old with open arms. It was at Huachipato where Martin learnt his trade as an attacker as well as a playmaker.
Debut
Joining Huachipato youth system at the age of 14, it took Martin Rodriguez only 2 years to break into the senior side. He made his debut in Liga MX in 2011 and was quickly cemented his spot in the squad with top notch performances.
Having represented Chile in the U-20 format on 12 occasions, Martin Rodriguez debuted with the senior team in a friendly match against Haiti after the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Rise to glory
After a successful first year with Huachipato, Rodriguez continued his form in the next season and carried his team to the 2012-2013 league title. His next season was marred with injuries and he missed out on FIFA Under-20 World Cup. His form in the subsequent season however, compelled the national selectors to give him a chance in the senior squad in 2014.
2015 saw him being transferred to one of the best clubs in the Chilean first division, Colo Colo. Martin spent a successful season with the club in which he appeared on 35 occasions while netting the ball 9 times. Colo Colo won the league as well as the 2016 Copa Chile. His sparkling form with Colo Colo resulted in his call up for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers held in Russia in 2016, although he could not get a chance to play.
In 2017 Martin Rodriguez transferred to another prestigious club, Cruz Azul for a sum of 2.8 million pounds. The year also saw him scoring his first international goal, which he netted in the the semi-finals of the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup against Australia.
