Miguel Calero: A Brief Biography
Miguel Ángel Calero Rodríguez, popularly known as Miguel Calero, is a former Colombian professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper in the Colombia junior national team for very long period and for the senior team in latter part of his career.
He has played for some popular clubs during the course of his career, some of them are - Deportivo Cali, Sporting de Barranquilla, Atletico Nacional and Pachuca.
Background
Born on 14 April 1971 in a small town of Ginebra in Colombia, Miguel started his youth career in 1986 while playing for a local club - Deportivo Cali. He spent 2 years in the youth setup of Cali.
Senior career
Miguel made his senior debut for his parent club in 1988 and went on to play for 9 years for the club. In overall 94 appearances which he made for Cali, he scored 2 goals and played a role of a dependable goalkeeper very efficiently. He was loaned to another league mate, Sporting de Barranquilla, for 86 matches during 1987 to 1992.
In 1998, he was signed by Atletico Nacional. In his debut season, Miguel was a part of the Copa Mustang Division Mayor: Premiera A Champion team. In a 2 year tenure with the club, he played in 91 matches.
In 2000, he was transferred to Mexico based club, Pachuca. He soon became captain of the team and played 23 tournaments with the club, winning 10 of them. Most important of them were - 4 national championships, 3 CONCACAF Champions Cups, 1 Copa Sudamericana and 1 SuperLiga title. In his 11 years tenure with club, He played 395 times and scored once against Chiapas in 2002.
Rise to glory
One of his brightest moments of Miguel came early in his career while playing for Deportivo Cali. On March 29, 1995 when he scored from behind the midfield against Deportivo Pereira.
This was the first time in 48 years that a professional goalkeeper netted in the local league.
In the same season, Miguel helped Deportivo Cali secure its first league title since 1974.
International career
He was called for the international duty at the age of 24. He played for the Colombia national team at the 1992 Summer Olympics and at the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
In 2002, he was also the part of the Colombia team that won their first ever Copa America championship.
Post retirement
He retired from football on 23 October 2011 while playing for Pachuca. He was hospitalized on 26 November 2012 as he was suffering from severe cerebral thrombosis and was declared dead on 4 December 2012 in a public press conference at Pachuca.
