Oscar Cordoba: A Brief Biography

Óscar Eduardo Córdoba Arce was born on 3rd of February, 1970. He is a former Colombian professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He was born in Valle, Colombia. He last represented the club Millonarios and played international football for the Colombian national football team for a period of 16 years.

Debut

He made his senior club career debut in the year 1988 representing Atlético Nacional at the age of 18 years. His international debut came on 31st of March, 1993 playing against Costa Rica in a friendly match.

Rise to glory

He won the Colombian Championship in 1997 playing for América de Cali. He had his best career after moving to Argentine club Boca Juniors. He was a part of the team that won the Argentine Championship Apertura in both 1998 and 2000 along with Clausura in 1999. The team also went on to lift Copa Libertadores in 2000 and 2001 and the Intercontinental Cup in 2000.

He was nominated by Fox Sports for the Outstanding Career Award which was given annually in the year 2008 which he won. The Scottish rock band Oscar Cordoba was named after him. He is the only player to have a clean sheet in Copa America.

In the 1994 FIFA World Cup, he conceded only 2 goals starting in every match to become the best goalkeeper in the playoffs. He won the award for the best goalkeeper in Copa America. In the year 2003, he surpass René Higuita’s 68 appearances to become the most capped goalkeeper in the history of Colombian football.

Club career

He started his career with Atlético Nacional in the year 1988 and then had very short stints with different clubs for 5 years till 1993 before signing into América de Cali. He later shifted to Boca Juniors in 1997 and had a successful career before moving into Beşiktaş in 2002. He lastly played for Millonarios before retiring from the game.

Retirement

He retired from professional football in December, 2009 playing his last club game for Millonarios. He last represented the Colombian national football team in October 2009 in a FIFA World Cup qualifier.
