Ronnie Baker is an American track and field athlete born on 15th October 1993. He is a native of Louisville city of Kentucky in the United States. Baker specializes in sprinting and represents his country in 60m and 100m sprints.
Background
Ronnie Baker was born to Ronald Baker and Lachelle Baker. He was born and brought up in Louisville city in the Kentucky district. American star sprinter Tyson Gay is Ronnie's distant relative.
Ronnie had an athletics interest at a very young age. He attended Ballard High School, where he started off his athletic career by running Cross Country. Later, he switched to 400m sprints and stuck with it till the completion of his high school education. While representing Ballard High School, Ronnie won the 100m and 400m titles twice at the 3A State Championships.
In 2013, after graduation from high school, Ronnie joined Texas Christian University, where he was a member of the college team TCU Horned Frogs and had represented them in NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships. At TCU, Ronnie majored in Kinesiology.
Rise to Glory
Ronnie Baker made his national debut in 2012, representing Louisville Track Club, at the US Junior Outdoor Track and Field, where he finished 15th in 400m sprints. The following year, he represented the TCU Horned Frogs at the NCAA Division 1 Championships and finished 7th in 4x100m and 4x400m Relays.
In 2015, Ronnie won the 60m indoor title at the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Championships. That year, in June, he won the Silver medal in 4x100m Relay at the NCAA Division 1 Championships, followed by his senior national outdoor debut at the US Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
In 2016, Ronnie Baker defended his 60m NCAA Indoor title. That year, in July, he won his first international title in 100m at the Meeting Citta Di in Podava, Italy. In 2017, Ronnie won his first national indoor title in 60m at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
In 2018, Ronnie won the Silver medals in 60m Indoor and 100m Outdoor at the USA Championships. In March 2021, he won the 100m title at the Texas Relays. Ronnie is recorded as the world’s 3rd fastest 60m-runner (6.40s) and joint 26th fastest-runner in 100m (9.87s).
Major Achievements
Ronnie Baker's major international breakthrough came in 2017 when he helped his US relay team to make it to the podium with a Gold medal in 4x100m by clocking 38.43s at the World Athletics Relays in Nassau, Bahamas. The following year, he won the Bronze medal in 60m at the World Indoor Championships.
In 2020, Ronnie had won the 60m title at the World Athletics Indoor Tour. He has a total of 4 circuit wins at the World Indoor Tour. In the Diamond League, Ronnie has 5 circuit wins in 2017 (1) and 2018 (4) under his belt.
Ronnie Baker is eyeing an Olympic berth in 100m at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics via US Olympic Trials and shall be in contention to win a medal in the event.
