Scott McLaughlin

Scott McLaughlin is a veteran champion of the Supercars championship who has been making steady moves in IndyCar. He was the second runner-up in the 2023 and 2024 IndyCar championships. Having participated in IndyCar for four seasons, McLaughlin has made his name as a formidable competitor. He has consistently finished in the top four four times in the past three seasons in IndyCar racing for Team Penske. McLaughlin is the youngest race winner in the Supercars championship. He won three consecutive Supercars championship titles from 2018 to 2020 before switching to IndyCar in 2021.

Scott McLaughlin is a native of Christchurch, New Zealand. He finished the 2024 IndyCar season with a career-best of three wins and eight podium finishes. He was also able to secure a pole position at the 2024 Indianapolis 500 however, he was unable to convert it into a race win.

Scott McLaughlin was born in New Zealand but moved to Hamilton at three. His family shifted to Australia when he was nine to further his upbringing. McLaughlin’s racing career started when he was in New Zealand, having started karting in 1999. McLaughlin was able to secure his first karting title in 2002. He used to compete in both New Zealand and Australia after his family shifted to Australia. McLaughlin was the representative of New Zealand in the Junior class in the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals. He finished the race in 19th position.

McLaughlin started his illustrious Supercars with the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series. He would have to wait until 2012 to earn his first title. In 2012, he went on to win the V8 SuperTourers Championship and the Dunlop V8 Supercars Championship earning himself a promotion to International V8 Supercars Championship in 2013. From 2013 to 2016, McLaughlin competed with Garry Rogers Motorsports, claiming a best finish of third in the championship in his final season. He switched to Team Penske in 2017 and finished the runner-up in the final standings with eight wins. From 2018-2020, he continued a dominant run of championship titles. He created the series record of 18 wins in a single season in 2019.

McLaughlin announced on his social media in 2020 that he would compete in IndyCar in a multi-year deal with Penske. He had to prove that he could handle the physically taxing and downforce-reliant open-wheel cars in IndyCar after racing in Supercars for nearly a decade. Scott McLaughlin has run 68 races in five years in IndyCar as of November 2024. He has seven wins and 19 podiums in the series.
