Seema Punia: A Brief Biography
Seema Punia is an Indian woman discus thrower born on 27th July 1983. She hails from the Khewda village of Sonipat district in Haryana. Seem has been representing India internationally since 2000.
Seema Punia- Early Life, Family & Background
Seema Punia began her career in athletics as an 11-year-old by trying her hands on hurdles and long jump. Later, she switched to discus throw. She did her schooling at a local school in her village and completed her graduation from Government College in Sonipat.
Seema got her first international breakthrough when she won the gold medal at the 2000 World Junior Championships. But unfortunately, her medal was stripped off due to a positive drug test for a banned substance. Two years later, she took home the bronze medal at the same tournament.
In 2004, Seema Punia made her Summer Games debut at the Athens Olympics, where she finished 13th with a throw of 60.64m. At the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia, she clinched the silver medal by throwing at a distance of 60.56m. For this achievement, she was conferred with Bhim Award by Haryana Government.

In 2010, Seema settled for a bronze medal in the discus throw with a throw of 58.46m at the Delhi Commonwealth Games. At the 2012 London Olympics, she finished at 13th position by throwing at a distance of 61.91m.
At the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Seema Punia took home a Silver medal by throwing the discus at a distance of 58.44m. That year, she clinched the gold medal with a great effort of 61.03m at the Incheon Asian Games in South Korea. In 2016, she appeared in her third Olympics at the Rio Olympics and finished 20th with a throw of 57.58m.
In 2018, Seema won her fourth consecutive medal at the Commonwealth Games by taking home a Silver medal. That year, she won the bronze medal at the Jakarta Asian Games in Indonesia.
In June 2021, Seema Punia qualified for her fourth Olympics at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics by achieving the qualification mark of 63.50m at the National Inter-State Athletics Championships in Patiala, Punjab.
