Shane van Gisbergen: A Brief Biography

Shane Van Gisbergen, or SVG, hailing from New Zealand, is a professional racing driver. The legendary Supercars Championship driver is competing full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series as of 2025. The 3-time Supercars Championship winner sits 4th on the all-time wins list in the Supercars Championship with 80 wins and 46 pole positions. Van Gisbergen, in his entire tenure at the Supercar Championships, only collaborated with two teams: Stone Brothers Racing and the Triple Eight Race Engineering
After making his NASCAR Cup Series debut in 2023, Van Gisbergen became the first driver since 1963 to win in his debut race. The 36-year-old driver (as of July 2025) is the winningest non-American driver in the NASCAR Cup Series. Shane, along with Paul Morris, is the only driver to win all 3 major events at Mount Panorama (the Bathurst 1000, Bathurst 6 Hour, and Bathurst 12 Hour).
Shane Van Gisbergen Early Life
Shane was born in Auckland, New Zealand, on 9 May 1989. He comes from a racing background as his father, Robert Van Gisbergen, used to be a former rally driver, as per the official website of Speedcafe. According to Van Gisbergen’s page on Red Bull, he pestered his dad to buy him a Suzuki ATV at the tender age of just five.
Shane competed in Motocross, Karts, and Quarter Midgets during his early years. After finishing third in the 2004/05 New Zealand Formula First Championship, Van Gisbergen went on to win the New Zealand Formula Ford Championship in the next season. He once again finished on the podium (2nd) in the 2006/07 Toyota Racing Series.
Shane Van Gisbergern's Supercars Championship Career
After his success in the New Zealand Ford Championship and Toyota Racing Series, Van Gisbergen entered the V8 Supercar championship in 2007 and later on went on to sign a contract with Stone Brothers Racing. During his five years with the team, his best finish came in 2011, when he placed fourth. After splitting with SBR, Shane went on to drive for Tenko Autosports and had his career-best finish at the time (2nd) in the 2014 season.
Shane Van Gisbergen’s Move to the Triple Eight Race Engineering Team
After spending three years with Tenko Autosports, Van Gisbergen united with the Triple Eight Race Engineering Team. In his first season with his new team, Shane won his first-ever Supercars Championship. While Van Gisbergen finished twice as runners-up (2018 and 2019) in the next 4 years, he was not able to clinch his 2nd Supercars Championship until 2021.
Van Gisbergen’s 2021 campaign showed an utter dominance as he went on to win 14 of the 30 total races and also finished on the podium 23 times. Van Gisbergen finished the season with a staggering 211 points ahead of second-place Jamie Whincup. He went on to defend his title in 2022 on the back of 20 wins (Van Gisbergen’s page on Red Bull). His last season in the Supercars Championship came in 2023, where he finished second. Shane concluded his Supercars Championship career by winning 3 titles and 80 wins.
Shane Van Gisbergen's NASCAR Career
After leaving the Supercars Championship, Van Gisbergen started his second stint with NASCAR. While he was in the middle of his 2023 Supercars Championship, he did participate in the Wild-card race in NASCAR that year. His debut win at Chicago Street Course made him the first racer in six decades to win his NASCAR Cup Series debut race. However, it wasn’t until 2024, he fully committed to NASCAR.
Van Gisbergen, in his first full year, competed in the NASCAR Xfinity Series while also running some selected Cup races. Van Gisbergen became a full-time Cup Series driver in 2025.
