Shaunae Miller-Uibo: A Brief Biography

Shaunae Miller-Uibo is a Bahamian track and field athlete born on 15th April 1994. She hails from Nassau in the Bahamas. Shaunae specializes in sprinting and represents her country in 400m and 200m events internationally.

Background:

Shaunae Miller-Uibo was born to Shaun Miller and Mabelene Miller. She was born and brought up in Nassau. Shaunae comes from a family of Afro-Bahamian heritage.

Shaunae had an athletic interest at a very young age. She attended St. Augustine College, where she began to pick up her dream of becoming an athlete by participating in school competitions. After the completion of high school education, Shaunae moved to the United States to enroll at the University of Georgia in Athens and became a member of the college team Georgia Bulldogs.

In 2014, Shaunae Miller-Uibo's athletic talent was spotted by Lance Burman and urged her to join the Pure Athletics Club. Since 2015, she has been trained at the club under the tutelage of Lance.

Shaunae Miller-Uibo is married to Estonia decathlete Maichel Uibo, who she had met while studying together at the University of Georgia.

Rise to Glory:

Shaunae Miller-Uibo got her career breakthrough in 2007 after she had a successful campaign at the CAC Age Group Championships (U14) with three Bronze medals in 80m, 60m hurdles, and Long Jump and two Silver medals in Shot Put and Hexathlon.

In 2009, Shaunae won two Bronze medals in 4x100m and 4x400m relay in the U-17 category at the CARIFTA Games. That year, she won a Bronze medal in the 4x400m relay at the Pan-American Junior Games.

In 2010, at the CAC Junior Championships (U17), Shaunae Miller-Uibo won a Gold medal in 400m and two Silver medals in 4x100m and 4x400m relays. That year, she won her first national title in 400m at the Bahamas National Championships. Shaunae has a total of six national championships titles, four in 400m (2010, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2019) and one in 200m (2017).

Shaunae Miller-Uibo is recorded as the world’s sixth fastest-runner in women’s 400m dash (48.37 seconds), second fastest in 300m (34.41s), and joint 11th fastest-runner in 200m (21.74s).

Major Achievements:

Shaunae Miller-Uibo received the limelight in 2010 when she emerged as world junior champion in 400m at the World Junior Athletics Championships. The following year, she topped the podium in 400m at the World Youth Athletics Championships.

In 2012, Shaunae made her Olympics debut at the London Olympics, where she participated in 400m sprints but failed to make it to the semi-final after she couldn’t finish 400m heats. At the 2013 World Athletics Championships, Shaunae finished 4th in the 200m final with a timing of 22.74 seconds. The following year, she made it to the podium with a Bronze medal in 400m at the World Indoor Championships.

At the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Shaunae Miller-Uibo finished 6th in 400m and 7th in 4x400m relay. In 2016, she emerged as Olympic champion in 400m by clocking 49.44 seconds at the Rio Olympics in Brazil. The following year, Shaunae helped her Bahamas relay team to clinch the Gold medal in the 4x400m relay at the World Athletics Relays.

Shaunae Miller-Uibo has two Silver medals in 400m (2015 and 2019) and a Bronze medal in 200m (2017) under her belt in the World Athletics Championships. At the 2018 Commonwealth Games, she clinched a Gold medal in 200m. That year, in September, Shaunae had swept three Gold medals in 200m, 4x100m relay, and 4x400m mixed relay at the Continental Cup.

In the Diamond League, Shaunae has emerged as winner thrice in 200m (2017, 2018, and 2019) and once in 400m (2017). Apart from winning the titles, she has 18 Diamond League circuit wins – 10 in 400m and 8 in 200m.

Shaunae Miller-Uibo will appear in her third Olympics at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and is one of the strong contenders for a Gold medal in 400m.
