Victor Oladipo: A Brief Biography

Born on May 4, 1982, Kehinde Babatunde Victor Oladipo is an American Basketball player who plays for the Miami Heat in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Victor started his professional basketball career after being selected as the second overall pick by the Orlando Magic in the 2013 NBA draft.

During the 2012-13 season, he was regarded as the Men’s College Basketball Player of the Year and a first-team All-American by the United States Basketball Writer’s Association (USBWA) and Sporting News. Later that year, Victor won the Adolph Rupp Trophy, an annual award given to the top NCAA Division I basketball player.

Victor Oladipo’s Early Life

Victor Oladipo was born in Silver Spring, Maryland, on May 4, 1982, and was raised in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. He comes from a Nigerian immigrant family, including his mother (Joan Oladipo), a nurse, his father (Chris Oladipo), and three sisters (Kristine, Kendra, and Victoria Oladipo), one of them is his twin.

His family shifted to the United States in 1985. Victor’s love for basketball was evident from an early age, as he continued to play basketball well beyond his school years.

Victor Oladipo’s Education

Victor enrolled at DeMatha High School in Hyattsville, Maryland. He played basketball for the school’s basketball team and averaged 11.9 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. He led the team to the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference and various city championships. Victor was regarded as the Washington Post 2010 All-Met First Team and the First Team All-WCAC.

After completing high school, Victor attended Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. He joined the college basketball team (the Indiana Hoosiers) and led the team to several championships. His impressive achievements were celebrated with various awards and honours, including the Men’s College Basketball Player of the Year, the National Co-Defensive Player of the Year and a first-team All-American.

Victor Oladipo’s NBA Journey

Orlando Magic

On April 9, 2013, Victor decided to leave Indiana University and enter the 2013 NBA draft. He was drafted as the second overall pick by the Orlando Magic, and later, he signed his rookie-scale contract with the team on July 8.

Victor recorded his first career triple-double in a match against the Philadelphia 76ers (On December 3, 2013), scoring 26 points and 10 rebounds.

Victor was unable to continue the season 2014 due to a fracture during the practice session on October 14. But fortunately, two days later, he secured his position with the team for the 2015-16 season by extending his rookie contract. He returned to the court on November 14 after wearing a facial protection mask. Victor participated in the Rising Star Challenge and Slam Dunk Contest during the 2015 NBA All-Star Weekend, finishing second in the dunk contest.

The Orlando Magic decided to keep Victor Oladipo in their team for the 2016-17 season by exercising their fourth-year team option on his rookie scale contract on October 25, 2015.

Oklahoma City Thunder

Victor, Ersan IIyasova, and the draft rights of Domantas Sabonis were traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder on June 23, 2016. Victor made his first appearance for the team on October 26 in a win over the Philadelphia 76ers, scoring 10 points in 26 minutes. On October 31, Victor signed a four-year contract worth $84 million with the Thunder.

Indiana Pacers

On July 6, 2017, the Indiana Pacers made a significant trade move, bringing in Victor and Domantas while dropping out Paul George. Victor played various matches against several teams, including Brooklyn Nets, Oklahoma City Thunder, Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Clippers.

On January 23, 2018, Victor was selected as an Eastern Conference All-Star reserve. He finished the 2017-18 season averaging 23.1 points per game, 5.2 rebounds and 4.3 assists and was regarded as the NBA Most Improved Player on June 25.

Victor Oladipo recorded a 102-101 comeback victory over the Boston Celtics on November 3, 2018, finishing with 24 points and 12 rebounds.

In the following year, Victor suffered from a ruptured quad tendon in his right knee, and he had a successful surgical procedure after five days. Victor finally returned to the court on January 29, 2020, after spending over a year due to injury.

Houston Rockets

On January 16, 2021, Victor joined the Houston Rockets in a four-team trade that involved James Harden moving to the Brooklyn Nets.

The Houston Rockets offered him a two-year contract in February 2021 worth $45.2 million, but he declined the offer. Victor played a total of 20 games with the Rockets.

Miami Heat

Victor was traded to the Miami Heat on March 25, 2021, in exchange for Avery Bradley and Kelly Olynyk. Victor played his first match for this team on April 1, against the Golden State Warriors and recorded a 116-109 win. In May, Victor underwent surgery to repair his right quadriceps tendons.

On August 7, 2021, Victor re-signed with the Heat based on a one-year deal at the Veteran’s minimum. He scored his season-high 40 points in a match against the Orlando Magic.

Victor Oladipo committed to the Miami Heat for another two years, signing a contract worth $18 million on July 7, 2022.
