Xabi Irureta Biography
Xabier Iruretagoiena Arantzamendi is a spanish goalkeeper who was signed by Delhi Dynamos in the ongoing season of the ISL. Born on 21st March 1986 in Ondarroa, Irureta is known for his calm and solid presence in front of the net. Playing seven years for the team Eibar, Irureta helped the side move to Spain’s top division League, La Liga.
Early days
Xabi Irureta is a product of Real Union, which is a club in spain’s Second highest League. Joining the club’s youth team, Irureta kept his head down and worked hard and broke into the senior side in the 2005-2006 season. Failing to capitalize on the opportunity, Irureta managed to play only 2 games for the side before moving to fourth division club, Club Deportivo Aurrerá during the summer.
The start of 2006-2007 season saw him being transferred to Eibar B, which was a third division club back then. Xabi’s footballing career took off from here.
Rise to glory
After joining SD Eibar in 2007 at the age of 29, Xabi was initially a part of the reserves and could not get a chance to play until 2009 where he played his first match against Xerez CD. He played three more matches in the year and cemented his seat in the main squad.
2012-2013 saw him playing 46 matches for the club where he helped his side move second division after four years.
The club made history in 2014 after being promoted to the top most division of the Spanish football league system and Xabi’s contract was extended for two years. He made his debut in La Liga against Real Sociedad where his side won the match 1-0.
In 2016, Irureta moved to the second division’s prestigious club, Real Zaragoza. However he left the club next year after failing to maintain his starting position in the squad.
Delhi Dynamos signed the Spanish goalkeeper in January 2018 where he made his debut against Chennaiyin FC. Having an excellent record in La Liga, the experienced Xabi would be expected to turn things around for the bottom placed Delhi Dynamos.
