3 Reasons why John Cena vs Kevin Owens Battleground match shouldn't be for US title

John Cena

John Cena vs. Kevin Owens for the US Championship at WWE BattlegroundThe stage is all set for the match between John Cena and Kevin Owens at the upcoming Battleground Pay-per-view. This is the third consecutive PPV match for Cena against Owens. As of now, the scores were settled at 1-1. Both these men were ready for the decider on July 19th at the Battleground event. But this time, things were a little different. This match at Battleground will be for the United States Championship. As of now, Cena vs. Owens is good for the company as long as it is a non-title match. Bringing the US title into the picture doesn’t look appealing for many reasons. Let us have a look at 3 reasons why this isn’t best for business.

#1 Letting down Cena

John Cena

Let us look at the other extreme of the story. Imagine Lilian Garcia announcing- and the new WWE US Champion Kevin Owens! That would not sound appealing to many ears. You cannot bring down a decade-long legacy of John Cena legacy so easily. You come from NXT, beat Cena in your first match, secure a 2-1 lead over the champ, win his US title and you do everything so easily?

Well, that’s not going to happen so quickly just because you are Kevin Owens! The WWE creative cannot let Owens win the match and grab the title from Cena.

#2 So far so good

1-1 looks good

Assuming that the match ends in a disqualification which is highly likely; would you continue this rivalry for ages? Cena cuts a promo- then Owens- then Cena- then a match at the next PPV-another re-match-a re-match again- how long will this continue? The chain should break somewhere and you should satisfy the fans with a happy ending.

If you are looking at the scenario of closing the match via DQ and proceed to abruptly end this rivalry that would sound awkward. Too big a story for too small an ending! Therefore, John Cena cannot retain the title via DQ. Then all this, 1-1 looks really good.

#3 Wasted Storyline for Owens

The fury intensified Kevin Owens

Assuming that WWE goes with the obvious and John Cena retains the title, What about the intense storylines built for Owens? Owens has been portrayed as a furious superstar over the past few months. Owens demolishes Machine Gun Kelly, attacks Cena numerous times, cuts many promos and all this for nothing?

If you really want Cena to have a lead over Owens, then why have 3 matches and give a 2-1 lead to Cena rather than having a singles match for the US title and giving Cena a clean victory. An NXT talent hand-picked and brought to WWE and his first win was against Cena!! What else can a young talent ask for? So, certainly such a big storyline should not end with a clean Cena win.
