5 Superstars who could be the new Intercontinental champion at WWE Battleground

Bad News Barrett was arguably having the push of his life after WrestleMania. He had some great matches and even went on to win the Intercontinental championship from Big E.However, that ride on momentum crashed into a barricade when he picked up an injury at the SmackDown tapings. The injury turned out to be more than what was projected and now Barrett has been forced to vacate his title. The WWE Universe would be feeling sad for the brawler and at the same time would be excited about the prospect of a new champion. Theyve already announced a battle royal to determine the champion and here is a look at the potential winners.

#5 Bo Dallas

Bo Dallas might’ve ended up looking like a fool at Money in the Bank but the inspirational superstar still has some momentum left in him which the company should utilize.

He is still unbeaten in his second run on the main roster and the fans are buying into the whole streak business. Bo Dallas winning the match and extending his streak with the Intercontinental title would raise his stock in the company.

Also Bo’s in ring work has received a lot of praise and he wouldn’t be having any trouble in pulling off good matches for the title with a variety of opponents. It will also break Bo from his current child stage which is not suited for a polished wrestler like him.

#4 Alberto Del Rio

Alberto Del Rio is at a dead end as far as his career is concerned. Though he headlined the last pay-per-view, Del Rio is still a long way from being relevant in the roster.

One way in which the company could revive his career is let him have a good title run in the midcard. With the in ring talent he has, Del Rio is sure to turn out into a fighting champion no matter how bad the company books him.

A face turn will also make matters more interesting and WWE can get the most out of him before he finally decides to head back to Mexico. And when Barrett returns, the two could have some solid matches that will put Barrett back into the mix.

#3 The Miz

This might sound a bit crazy but Miz has everything going his way at the moment. His return might've been botched by the company but Miz is still starring in the fourth edition of the Marine series.

There are rumors of him being linked with Ric Flair in the near future which further helps Miz to reach the heights. Even if he doesn't get Flair, Miz might still get some good push from the company so that they will be able to promote their movie.

WWE won't have any better option to put Miz back into the limelight than the battle royal that will take place at Battleground. And since he has the experience of holding many titles, one more to the resume wouldn't be much of a burden.

#2 Rusev

Rusev showed the fans what he is all about at Money in the bank when he faced Big E in a lengthy match. He proved to everyone that he is not only about squashing jobbers and has a lot more to give than his size.

The WWE wisely gave him a new foe by having Jack Swagger take Big E’s spot but they haven’t made any match for the Bulgarian Brute at Battleground. The last time Rusev was in a battle royal, the only superstar who stopped him from winning the whole thing was Roman Reigns who in the end won the match.

A similar performance from Rusev at Battleground would yield him the title since there won’t many names in the range of Roman Reigns at the pay-per-view. Rusev winning such a prestigious title would boost his character and Lana’s anti-American promos since he would’ve won gold on American soil.

#1 Cesaro

From the night after WrestleMania, the fans has been waiting for that one moment which would let Cesaro stamp his place as a top performer in the roster. Though he got Paul Heyman by his side and though he has been put into all the main event matches, Cesaro still is distant from the big thing.

Many wanted him to become the WWE Champion at Money in the bank but apparently the company wasn’t ready to take risks or give Cesaro that jump.

This may hint that they want to take it slow with the Swiss Superman and the Intercontinental title could be something which can help him make the transition.

With Brock Lesnar returning soon, Cesaro is sure to get overshadowed by him and the Intercontinental title could act as a distraction while Lesnar can make his usual short run.
