Pulling off some big twists in pay-per-views has been a hobby for the WWE creative team and another stage for the same will be coming up this Sunday at Battleground. The fact that it is packed with some exciting matches raises the expectations of the fans and also provides the company with an ideal opportunity to make it big in the headlines. Surprise returns and swerves are the usual textbook stuff and both might happen in at the pay-per-view during one stage or the other.Absence of names like CM Punk and Daniel Bryan has kept the WWE writers on their toes when it comes to booking shows and they will be feeling the pressure on Sunday as well. So here is a look at some of the surprises that the company could pile up at Battleground to mask the flaws that they might make.
#5 Brock Lesnar returning
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
The rumors of Lesnar returning at Battleground have been all around the internet and if it happens, the fans wouldn’t be much surprised.
The only question that remains now will be the capacity in which he will be used at the pay-per-view. An alignment with the Authority could be on the books as Hunter would want a champion like Lesnar rather than Cena who is projected as a rebel.
Another interesting prospect about Lesnar’s return would be how the company would use Cesaro after that. Heyman being absent from Cesaro’s side was the initial sign of how the Swiss Superman might be booked in Lesnar’s presence and this opens up many possibilities.
Even if Lesnar doesn’t make his return at Battleground, he is sure to do the same at next night’s Raw but a pay-per-view will be a much bigger stage.
#4 Midcard title unification
A new Intercontinental champion is sure to be crowned at Battleground and though there are many credible names in the match, one in particular which could come out as a surprise would be Sheamus.
The Celtic warrior is having a great run as the United States champion right now and including him in the battle royal was an intelligent decision by the company as it opens up the opportunity for them to unify the Midcard titles.
Having two champions in the midcard is actually a good idea for promoting younger talent but so was the idea of having two headlining titles. And now that WWE packed up the idea of two separate main event champions, the midcard could be renovated as the same.
Sheamus is someone fitting to carry the two titles around and he could have a feud with Cesaro for SummerSlam and give the Swiss Superman his SummerSlam moment.
#3 A Daniel Bryan segment
Daniel Bryan’s injury was a big setback for WWE without any doubt and one thing they did well after that was to keep is momentum going with some appearances here and there.
At Money in the Bank as well, Bryan had a strong segment which refreshed the fans on what Bryan used to be and the company could easily do something similar at Battleground so that the fans wouldn’t receive Bryan as an alien when he makes his in ring return.
Bryan having another involvement with Bo could help Bo on the longer run and the company could use Bryan to elevate someone heel status.
If Rusev ends up attacking Bryan while he is addressing the crowd it will elevate his heel status further and at the same time, the company would be putting Bryan to good use while he is injured.
#2 Kane or Orton swerving against the Authority
Though they will be an instrumental part in the match, Kane and Orton have no chances whatsoever of winning the WWE championship. This would leave both Kane and Orton free for Summerslam and in need of a good angle.
At this situation, the only direction in which WWE could progress the angle would be to let either Kane or Orton turn face. The latter would be the ideal choice as Kane fits into the Authority puppet gimmick well.
A face Orton would be more effective in the crucial period after SummerSlam as he will have a lot of angles to be part of.
One of these would be a feud with his former mentor Triple H to give the fans a trip back into the memory lane to remind them about the chemistry that these two had as opponents.
#1 A Money in the bank cash in
The biggest twist that could come out of any pay-per-view after Money in the Bank is contract cash in and the title change. Battleground won’t be any different as Seth Rollins has been more than involved with the title picture.
A fatal four way match is surely going to take a lot out of whoever the last man standing will be. Rollins being the ultimate opportunist could see the opening and pounce on it to become the new champion.
A twist like this would ensure Rollins headlining SummerSlam which will be the best moment of his career.
It would be the biggest swerve that WWE can pull of this Sunday as the fans are preparing themselves to see Cena win the title and go to SummerSlam to face the beast.
