Georgia Betting Laws & Guide

Georgia isn’t a state that has ever been heavy in gambling, but they’re having discussions about it. Led by the various sports franchises and political candidates, major players are trying to sell the benefits of implementing sports betting, for everyone with stakes involved. There isn’t anything in place yet, but momentum is favoring sports betting arriving in the Peach State shortly.

Is Sports Betting Legal in Georgia?

No, Georgia currently does not have any legal sports betting avenues, but they are considering ways to bring sports betting and casinos to the state. Gambling isn’t something that has a major place in Georgia, but the tide appears to be turning.

Is DraftKings Sports Betting Legal in Georgia?

For now, DraftKings is illegal in Georgia and won’t accept any wagers from anyone trying to bet through them in Georgia. When sports betting comes to Georgia, it shouldn’t be a shock if DraftKings is one of the first sportsbooks to launch in the state. They’re already in Tennessee, and daily fantasy is available through DraftKings already.

Why is Sports Betting Illegal in Georgia?

Sports betting is still illegal in Georgia because the government hasn’t reached an agreement on a bill yet. Even when that happens, Georgia residents have to vote it into law for sports betting to officially have a pulse. While that seems like a lot, there has been a lot of pressure from many different sides that want sports betting to become legal in the state.

When Will Georgia Sports Betting Start?

There isn’t a concrete timetable for Georgia sports betting, but the earliest it could arrive is realistically late in 2023. The 2022 legislative talks stalled in terms of sports betting, so the January 2023 talks are the soonest that they could progress toward implementation. Depending on how quickly they work to put everything in place, late 2023 or early 2024 seem like the nearest targets for Georgia.
