The 4th FINA World Junior Swimming Championships get under way in Dubai, United Arab Emirates today (Monday, 26th August).
The competition was first held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2006 and has been staged bi-annually for swimmers under the age of 18 since. There was a break when the 2010 competition was held in 2011 instead.
This is the first time the competition is being held outside the Americas, having previously been held in Mexico and Peru in addition to the inaugural event in Brazil.
The Indian squad comprises of Ananya Panigrahi (100m and 200m Backstroke), Meenakshi VKR (100m and 200m Butterfly, 200m and 400m Individual Medley), Bobby Rana (50m, 100m, 200m Butterfly), Mitesh Kunte (200m, 400m Freestyle, 200m Butterfly), Pranam B (50m, 100m, 200m Backstroke) and Yaqoob (200m, 800m and1500m Freestyle).
4 Indian junior swimmers will be in action today:
Mitesh Kunte will take part in the 400m freestyle heats for the men, and with the finals for the same event also today, he could end the day with a medal.
Pranam B will represent India in the 100m backstroke heats and should he qualify, will take part in the semi-finals later today.
Meenakshi VKR will participate in the 400m individual medley heats in the women’s category and will look to qualify for the final, which is also later today.
Finally, Ananya Panigrahi will wear Indian colours in the 100m backstroke heats. The semi-final are later today and the final for the event tomorrow.
