Gretchen Walsh holds the World Record in the Women’s 100-meter Butterfly category. Despite her young age, Walsh is considered to be one of the greatest women’s swimmers and her world record is one of the major reasons behind this. On June 15, 2024, during the US Olympic Trials, Gretchen Walsh completed the 100-meter Butterfly long course in 55.18 seconds, which is the fastest by any female swimmer. She did so in Indianapolis, United States.

Before Gretchen Walsh, the record was held by Sarah Sjöström of Sweden who has held the world record five times with timings ranging from 56.44 seconds to her best 55.48 seconds. While Walsh made the world record in June 2024, she went on to beat Sjöström’s score once again in the Paris Summer Olympics itself. In the semi-final of the 100-meter Butterfly category, she completed the track in 55.38 seconds, which is now the fastest 100-meter Butterfly by any female in the Olympic games. She eventually won a silver medal in the category at the ongoing 2024 Paris Summer Olympics.
