Born on May 20, 2000, in Sydney, Australia, Kieran Smith is an American Competitive swimmer excelling in freestyle and individual medley events. Smith began swimming in Ridgefield, Connecticut, where he grew up and attended Ridgefield High School. He was named Connecticut Hugh School Coaches Association "Swimmer of the Year" in 2016 and 2017. He joined the US National Junior Team in 2017 and won a silver medal at the Junior World Championships in the 200-meter individual medley. Smith enrolled at the University of Florida for higher studies. There he competed for the Florida Gators. His college career was marked by numerous accolades which included setting the American and NCAA records in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:06.32 seconds at the 2020 SEC Championships. He earned himself the title of Southeastern Conference's "Male Swimmer of the Year" award for the 2019–2020 season.
Smith turned professional at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics where he won a bronze medal in the 400-meter freestyle. He became the first American to medal in the event since 2012. He also competed in the 200-meter freestyle and finished 6th. He also competed in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay, where his team placed fourth. Smith won multiple events at the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational and earned the SEC's "Men's Swimmer of the Week" honor in 2021. At the 2021 World Short Course Championships in Abu Dhabi, he won a gold medal in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay and also set a new American record. Smith won two individual titles and four relay titles at the 2022 Southern Conference Championship.
He also competed in the NCAA Championship where he helped his team to multiple finishes. At the 2022 US International Team Trials, Smith qualified for the World Aquatics Championships in the 200-meter and 400-meter freestyle events. He won a gold medal in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay at the World Championship. He also won gold in the 400-meter freestyle with a new US Open record time of 3:35.99 at the 2022 Swimming World Cup. Smith won a gold medal in the 400-meter freestyle in an American record time of 31:34.38 at the 2022 World Short Course Championships. He also contributed to a world record in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay, winning gold with a time of 6:44.12. He was also part of the 4×100-meter medley relay team that set a new world record with a time of 3:18.98.
