Joseph Hunter Armstrong is a competitive swimmer from Dover, Ohio, United States. Hunter was born on January 24, 2001, to parents Ryan Armstrong and Edie Armstrong. Ryan and Edie participated in athletics while studying at Ferrum College in Virginia, United States. Hunter’s elder brother Jake Armstrong is a two-time Big 12 champion and has received a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Honourable Mention in the hundred breaststroke.
During his freshman season from 2019 to 2020 at West Virginia University, Hunter became third in the 100-meter backstroke and fourth in the 50-meter and 100-meter freestyle. He later moved to Ohio State University and performed exceptionally at his first Big Ten Championships. He also competed in OSU’s relays, achieving 2nd place in both the 800-meter freestyle relay and the 400-meter freestyle relay, and 3rd place in the 400-meter medley relay and the 200-meter freestyle relay.
Hunter Armstrong qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games by earning second place in the 100-meter backstroke at the 2020 US Olympic Trials. In the 2020 Summer Olympics, He won his first Olympic medal by helping Team USA win gold in the 4×100-meter medley relay. In 2024, he is set to represent the United States again at the Paris Olympics.
