The Pro Swim Series 2024’s third night of action promised fans four different events - the 200m freestyle, 200m backstroke, 400m individual medley, and the 100m butterfly. As fans got ready for another round of insane speed, there were some exciting and unexpected twists and turns lined up.
Getting things going was the women's 200m freestyle. The race was piped to be a close battle between Summer McIntosh and Katie Ledecky before Ledecky chose to pull out in order to focus on her 400m individual medley.
This left the field wide open for McIntosh who won gold with a time of 1:55.41, nearly three seconds ahead of second place finisher Erin Gemmell. Olympic gold-medalist Simone Manuel settled for bronze.
Meanwhile, in the men's 200m freestyle at the Pro Swim Series, the competition was intense and close. Felix Aubock raced ahead to gold as he clocked 1:46.70, while only 0.02 seconds separated silver and bronze medalist Grant House and Kieran Smith.
Next up was the women's 200m backstroke, which was another closely contested event. As the race began it was World Championships bronze medalist Isabelle Stadden who led the pool. However, Olympic silver-medalist Claire Curzan caught up at the final turn, eventually taking the win nearly a second ahead of Stadden. Tennessee's Josephine Fuller came in third.
The men's 200m backstroke at the Pro Swim Series saw all three medalists finish within a second of each other. However, Hunter Tapp managed to distinguish himself from his competitors from the very first 50, eventually winning gold. Daniel Diehl and Jack Aikins took silver and bronze with a time of 1:59.16 and 1:59.98, respectively.
The women's 400m individual medley posed a surprise for fans, as both Tess Cieplucha and Ella Nelson finished ahead of Katie Ledecky. However, Nelson was disqualified for a stroke violation, catapulting Ledecky into second place, while Lea Polonsky was promoted to third. This marks Katie Ledecky's first loss at the Pro Swim Series 2024.
The men's 400m individual medley brought another twist, as Carson Foster piped Bobby Finke for the win. Foster clocked a stunning 4:13.04 for his gold, which was more than five seconds ahead of Finke. Olympic silver-medalist for the event, Jay Litherland, took home bronze.
The last races of the night at the Pro Swim Series 2024 were the women's and men's 100m butterfly. Both competitions went down to the wire, with all the medalists finishing within a second of each other.
On the women's end, it was Gretchen Walsh that emerged victorious, while Maggie MacNeil and Claire Curzan finished second and third. Meanwhile, Shaine Casas walked away with the win in the men's 100m butterfly at the Pro Swim Series, as Dare Rose and Santo Condorelli took silver and bronze.
