Riley Gaines, born on April 21, 2000, is a former competitive swimmer from Gallatin, Tennessee. While she has not won any Olympic medals, her achievements include multiple Southeastern Conference (SEC) championship titles, with at least three individual gold medals in the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard butterfly events. She also earned a silver medal as part of the 4 × 200-yard freestyle relay team at the 2021 NCAA Division I Women's Championships.
Gaines attended the University of Kentucky, where she competed for the NCAA swim team from 2019 to 2022. In 2022, Gaines was named the SEC Women's Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Her swimming journey began at Station Camp High School, where she won state championships in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard freestyle. At the University of Kentucky, Gaines made the All-SEC Freshman Team in 2019 and the All-SEC Second Team in 2019 and 2020. She progressed to the All-SEC First Team in 2021.
Gaines gained national attention in 2022 when she tied for fifth place with Lia Thomas in the 200-yard NCAA freestyle championship.
