Phelps was key in Team USA’s 4x100m free win today

Swimmer Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian in the history of the Games, today won gold with Team USA in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay. Phelps, who now has 23 Olympic medals, was instrumental in his team’s victory today.

Also participating in the men’s 200m butterfly among other events, Phelps holds both Olympic and World records in that event .

Defending Olympic champions France took the lead early on in the game, but saw a strong fight back from team USA, who decimated their lead.The two teams have traditionally been swimming rivals, but today the French were forced to be happy with silver, with a powerful Phelps swimming in his final Olympics this year.

Team Australia came in third. The country has long produced illustrious swimmers – among them the legendary Ian Thorpe, and today put in a spirited performance for the third place medal.

Team USA had been in second place until Phelps took over from teammate Caeleb Dressel, taking his team into the lead, with a split time of 47.12s. Experienced sprinter Nathan Adrian, with a 46.97s split time, brought the Americans home for gold.
