Ryan Murphy is a professional American swimmer who specializes in backstroke swimming style. Notably, he has six Olympic medals to his name out of which three gold medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics. This was followed by one gold, one silver, and one bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics

In addition to the Olympics, Murphy won four medals at the 2017 World Aquatics Championships, three golds at the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships, and three silvers at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships, followed by four medals each in the 2022 and 2023 World Championships.

Presently, he holds the record for the fastest 50-metre backstroke and 100-metre backstroke by any athlete hailing from North or South America at a personal best of 22.53 and 51.85 seconds. With respect to the 100-metre backstroke, Murphy also held the world record at one point.

Ryan Murphy was born in Chicago, Illinois but grew up in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, where he began swimming at a young age. Ponte Vedra Beach is a coastal community located in St. Johns County, Florida.

Murphy later attended Bolles School, a private school in Jacksonville, Florida, known for its strong swimming program. While there, he excelled under guidance of coach Gregg Troy and set numerous age-group records. Furthermore, he earned accolades at various youth competitions.

After high school, Murphy attended University of California, Berkeley, where he competed for the California Golden Bears swim team under coach Dave Durden. His collegiate career was marked by significant achievements, including eight NCAA individual titles and other records. Remarkably, his great performances there pushed his career to greater heights and eventually helped him become one of the greatest American swimmers of all time.

Ryan Murphy was born in Chicago, Illinois on July 2, 1995, to Pat Murphy and Kate Murphy and was inspired to take up swimming by his older siblings. Notably, he was just 10 months old when he was acquainted with water
