Tulane Green Wave Football Team History

Tulane's football history began in 1890 with the first organized game in New Orleans, introduced by Yale students Hugh and Thomas Bayne. Tulane's intercollege play started in 1893, beating LSU in their first match. Joining the Southern Intercollege Athletic Association (SIAA) in 1895, Tulane faced ups and downs, including a notable 1896 forfeit against LSU due to an ineligible player. After a perfect season in 1900, Tulane experienced mixed results, including a winless 1910 season and setting school records in 1912.

Originally called the "olive and blue," they became the Greenbacks in 1919 and the Green Wave in 1920, thanks to student Edward Earl Sparling. Mascots like Pete the Pelican, Greenie, and Angry Wave added to their identity. Today, Tulane competes in the NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision as part of the American Athletic Conference, playing home games at Yulman Stadium, coached by Jon Sumrall.

Jon Sumrall (born July 5, 1982) is the head football coach at Tulane University, starting in 2023. Previously, he coached at Troy University from 2022 to 2023, leading them to a 12-2 record and a Cure Bowl win in his first season. Sumrall began his coaching career at Kentucky, his alma mater, and has coached at San Diego, Tulane, and Ole Miss. He returned to Kentucky in 2019 as the inside linebackers coach before being promoted to co-defensive coordinator.

Tulane Green Wave Football Team Stadium

Yulman Stadium is the on-campus home for Tulane University football in New Orleans, Louisiana, with a capacity of 30,000 spectators. Opened on September 6, 2014, with a game against Georgia Tech, it replaced the Mercedes-Benz Superdome after 39 seasons. The stadium features two premium seating areas: the Jill H. and Avram A. Glazer Family Club and the Westfeldt Terrace. Yulman Stadium also boasts a large LED video board, two ribbon displays, and a meeting space for year-round use. The Athletes Plaza in front of the stadium hosts pre- and post-game activities, enhancing the game day experience.

LSU

Tulane's biggest and oldest rival is LSU. The rivalry began in 1893, and the teams competed for the "Rag." LSU leads the series 69–23–7 through the 2019 season.

Southern Miss

Known as the Battle for the Bell, Tulane's rivalry with Southern Miss started in 1979. Southern Miss leads the series 24–9 through the 2022 season.

Auburn

Tulane has a rivalry with Auburn, leading the series 17–15–6 through the 2019 season.

Ole Miss

Tulane also has a rivalry with Ole Miss, leading the series 43–28 series through the 2023 season.

Battle for the Rag

Tulane and LSU's rivalry is marked by the Battle for the Rag, a traditional competition between the two teams. The series includes notable moments like the 0-0 tie in the 13th Battle for the Flag in 1914 and Tulane's 14-0 victory in 1973, ending a 25-game non-winning streak.
