World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka will take on Mexico's Renata Zarazua in the second round of the Brisbane International on December 31, 2024. The winner will face either 15th seed Yulia Putintseva or McCartney Kessler in the third round of the WTA 500 event.

Sabalenka had the best season of her career so far in 2024, as she won two Grand Slams and two WTA 1000 titles. These performances saw the Belarusian regain the World No. 1 ranking.

Sabalenka ended her year at the WTA Finals in Riyadh, where she reached the semifinals before losing to eventual champion Coco Gauff.

Renata Zarazua competed rather sporadically on the WTA Tour in 2024, as she mostly took part in ITF and WTA 125 events. The Mexican's most notable performance was reaching the quarterfinals at the Merida Open.

Zarazua started her 2025 season at the Brisbane International and faced Viktoriya Tomova in the opening round. The Mexican thrashed the Bulgarian 6-0, 6-3 to book her place in the second round of the WTA 500 event.

Sabalenka is currently in the form of her life, and she will no doubt be the heavy favorite to win the match. The Belarusian's game has evolved over the years, particularly how she manages to control her aggression and avoids making too many mistakes on the court.

The 26-year-old's intensity has not diminished one bit and she will certainly look to make life difficult for Zarazua from the start. The Mexican did not have an impressive record on her first serve in her match against Tomova, having won 25 out of 39 points. That said, she did win 18 out of 21 points on the Bulgarian's second serve.
