Krueger was pushed to three sets by Moyuka Uchijima in the first round but toughed out a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 win over her. She upset sixth Anna Kalinaskaya 6-3, 6-3 in the next round to set up a third-round showdown against Suzan Lamens.
The two matched each shot for shot at the start of the first set. Lamens was the first to strike as she went up a break to lead 5-3. That marked the end of the road for her. Krueger nabbed the next four games to take the set and reeled off six straight games in the second set as well for a 7-5, 6-0 win.
Kudermetova came through the qualifying rounds without losing a set. She beat Wang Xinyu 6-1, 6-3 in her opener, and then staged a comeback to oust 13th seed Liudmila Samsonova. She took on third seed Daria Kasatkina for a spot in the last eight.
Kudermetova was outplayed in the first set and lost it rather tamely as she could muster only one game for herself. She started the second set by securing a break of serve, only to immediately surrender her advantage. However, she got back on track by going on a five-game run to claim the set.
The momentum swung in Kasatkina's favor in the third set as she raced to a 4-0 lead. Kudermetova didn't throw in the towel and swept seven of the next eight games to secure a 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 comeback win.

Krueger was simply unstoppable once she went down a break against Lamens in the previous round, and didn't lose a game after that. She and Kudermetova are gunning to reach the semifinals of a WTA 500 tournament for the first time.
Both have knocked out higher-ranked players in Brisbane. However, Krueger has won her matches rather comfortably compared to Kudermetova, who had to dig deep. She has also won more tour-level matches compared to the Russian. As such, the American will be expected to come through this match.
