Paula Badosa vs Elina Avanesyan preview
Elina Avanesyan scored a comeback win in her Brisbane International opener to set up an intriguing second-round meeting with Paula Badosa, who will be playing her first match of the new season.
Badosa, the fourth seed at this year’s tournament, had a strong finish to the 2024 season. Coming back from injury lay-offs, she lifted her first title in nearly two years at the Citi Open and carried that momentum into the US Open and Asian swings.
The Spaniard’s 37-18 win-loss for the season included semifinals at Cincinnati and Beijing and a US Open quarterfinal. She was also back in the top 15 world rankings by year-end.
Avanesyan, meanwhile, also enjoyed a career-best season in 2024. Having started the year at No. 75, she rose to No. 43 after making her second consecutive French Open fourth round and a first Tour-level final at Iasi.
The Armenian also built a reputation for being a giant-killer, taking three top-10 scalps (Maria Sakkari, Ons Jabeur, and Zheng Qinwen) during the season. She started the new season well, with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Rebecca Sramkova.

Paula Badosa vs Elina Avanesyan prediction
Paula Badosa and Elina Avanesyan possess strong baseline-oriented games and will look to battle for control from there.
The Spaniard does have a slight advantage in terms of having the bigger serve of the two, but the Armenian enjoys playing against pace. The latter is also a great returner, having won a solid 40% of all her first-serve returns and 56% of the second-serve return points in 2024.
The victory over Rebecca Sramkova, who was on a winning spree of her own, would have given Avanesyan a lot of confidence and helped her get used to the playing conditions.
Badosa may take some time to find her range given it’s her first competitive match in months. If the Armenian can use any early jitters from Badosa and keep her own error count in check, she will definitely be in with a chance to upset.
Pick: Avanesyan wins in three sets.
