Founded in 1891, the French Open, also known as Roland Garros, is one of the four major tennis tournaments that are generally referred to as the Grand Slam tournaments. Every year, from late May to early June, it takes place in Paris' Stade Roland Garros.

The French Open has been played on outdoor clay courts, a slower surface with a higher bounce compared to other surfaces.

The women's doubles event didn't debut in the French Championships tennis tournament until 1907, which was 16 years after the event's founding. Up until 1924, the French Championships were exclusively limited to French citizens and permanent residents; however, starting in 1925, players of all nationalities were welcome to compete.

The seventh woman to complete a career grand slam, Martina Navratilova, has the most number of French Open women's doubles titles, with seven. She has an Open Era record of 167 singles titles, most in women active players. After her is Chris Evert, with 157 titles. Her 59 major titles, which include 18 in singles, 31 in doubles, and 10 in mixed doubles, also set records for the most in the Open Era.
