Mensik told ATPTour.com that he began playing tennis at the age of five since his family used to reside near a tennis court in Prostejov and saw "guys from the neighbourhood playing." Thus, he asked his parents and started to play tennis. His childhood coach, Ivo Muller, was also one of the reasons for his love for the sport. His father, Michal, while talking about Muller, said, “he was the best man because he could grow the right love of tennis to the small children, and he also taught the parents to be good tennis parents.”
Muller passed away in June 2013 from cancer, when Mensik was seven years old. Michal believed that "this was his (Jakub) first experience with such a situation." He further added, “He was sad and it was the first chance we had to speak with him about death, these kind of situations. I think he was sad of course, but life goes on.” (via ATPTour.com)
