Having started playing tennis with the encouragement of his father, Sonego played his first ATP match at the 2016 Italian Open. He lifted his maiden Challenger title at the 2017 Sparkassen Challenger by registering a win over Tim Putz. He came to prominence at the 2020 Vienna Open, where he entered the tournament as a lucky loser; he upset Novak Djokovic.

Sonego won his maiden ATP title at the 2019 Antalya Open, clinching victory over Miomir Kecmanovic in the final (6-7, 7-6, 6-1).
