Considered one of the prominent futures of men's tennis, Lorenzo Sonego is a professional player who turned professional in 2013. Having started playing tennis with the encouragement of his father, Sonego played his first ATP match at the 2016 Italian Open. He lifted his maiden Challenger title at the 2017 Sparkassen Challenger by registering a win over Tim Putz. He came to prominence at the 2020 Vienna Open, where he entered the tournament as a lucky loser; he upset Novak Djokovic.

Sonego is ranked world No. 55 as of January 2025 and achieved the career-high ranking of No. 21 on October 4, 2021. He recorded his best grand slam performance at the 2025 Australian Open, where he advanced to the quarterfinals. He registered wins over Stan Wawrinka, Fabian Marozsan and Learner Tien en route to face Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals. He made it to his first Masters semifinal at the 2021 Rome Open but lost to Djokovic in three sets. He is an aggressive player known for his strong serve and powerful forehand.

As of January 2025, Sonego has won four ATP titles - the 2024 Winston-Salem Open, the 2022 Metz Open, the 2021 Cagliari Open, and the 2019 Antalya Open. At the 2024 Winston-Salem Open, he registered a win over Alex Michelsen in the final to lift his fourth ATP title. By winning the title, he became the fourth player to win on all surfaces, including the hard, grass, and clay. His next title came at the 2022 Moselle Open, where he defeated Alexander Bublik by 7-6, 6-2. Sonego won his maiden ATP title at the 2019 Antalya Open, clinching victory over Miomir Kecmanovic in the final (6-7, 7-6, 6-1).
