Novak Djokovic, a professional tennis player from Serbia, is regarded as the greatest player to have ever lived. He maintained the #1 spot in the ATP rankings for a total of 373 weeks, the longest streak by any make player.

Djokovic had also stood out from the crowd, joining Federer and Nadal as members of the Big Three, who some consider to be the three greatest male tennis players of all time. The Serbian phenom is also the current World No.1, competing with the third generation of tennis players. He has won 98 singles titles thus far, as well as one doubles title.

Born on 22 May 1987 in Belgrade, Serbia, Novak Djokovic began playing tennis at the age of four. Growing up, the 37-year-old idolized Pete Sampras, before turning pro in 2003. He has won 24 Grand Slam titles, holds the record for the most majors and longest reigning World No.1, and has the most match wins combining all four Slams.

"Nole" is considered one of the most technically sound and tactically gifted players of all time; additionally, his mental fortitude is second to none. He has all the shots in the book, and thrives under pressure situations. As of early 2025, Djokovic is being coached by Andy Murray.

Djokovic registered victory over Alcaraz in the final of the 2024 Paris Olympics by 7–6(7–3), 7–6(7–2) thus winning a gold medal for Serbia. He started the 2025 season by advancing to the semifinals of the 2025 Australian Open by defeating Alcaraz with a final scoreline of 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals, extending his record for semifinal appearances to 50. He will next face German tennis sensation Alexander Zverev in the semifinals.

When Did Novak Djokovic Win His First Australian Open?

Novak Djokovic won his maiden Australian Open, and first ever major, in 2008. He beat France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final, with a scoreline of 4-6 6-4 6-3 7-6(2). Interestingly, that was the first Grand Slam final since the 2005 Australian Open to not feature either Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal in the summit clash. The Australian Open is held annually at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Australia. The tournament is the first of the four tennis Grand Slam competitions conducted annually, coming before the French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open.

Novak Djokovic has grabbed 10 titles at Melbourne Park thus far. The first occurred in 2008, when he overcame a tough game to win the championship match. After this, he also won in the years 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2023. His latest title at Australian Open was in 2023, when he beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in a straight sets final. In the 2024 Australian Open, Djokovic made it to the semifinal stage, where he lost to Italian Jannik Sinner 1-6 2-6 7-6(6) 3-6. This was the Serb's first loss at a semifinal or final in the tournament, making his record 20-1. He has 89 victories at the Australian Open.
