In the Pittsburgh area, the heat's been on for those who have been in net. Tristan Jarry and Casey DeSmith have been the two goalies that the Penguins have relied on this season, and they started out the season hot. Both goalies combined for league-leading numbers throughout the first two months of the season. However, that has taken a nosedive.
Lately, the pressure has been felt by fans and media alike to fix the situation in net. Come deadline time, it looks like the Penguins will be goalie hunting. Let’s take a look at three possible options on the trade market for the Penguins and the reality of Pittsburgh making a deadline deal:
These three goalies could be options for Pittsburgh at the deadline.
Thatcher Demko- Vancouver Canucks
Demko will be the most sought-after goaltender on the market and will fetch a pretty penny for any team looking to acquire him. If the Penguins want to buy in for this season and next while their older corps is still performing at a high level, Demko is the name to go after.
Demko is making 5M AAV before the end of the 2025-26 season. The Penguins will certainly have to pay up. The Canucks will probably be interested in significant draft compensation and prospects. For a team not flush with either, this is an “all chips in the middle of the table” move for Pittsburgh.
James Reimer- San Jose Sharks
Will James Reimer be an upgrade over Jarry or DeSmith? Probably not. If the Penguins are looking to make a change in net and are not looking to break the bank for a talent, Raimer could be the best option. The Sharks will be selling at the deadline, and Reimer has played well despite having one of the worst teams in the league playing in front of him.
The Sharks won’t ask for much from Pittsburgh to take Reimer off of their hands. Trading DeSmith would be a wise choice for the Pens, and it might cost them a late-round pick as well. If Reimer can catch a hot streak like he’s done in the past for teams across the league, it might be worth it.
Cam Talbot- Ottawa Senators
Cam Talbot is still fresh off two career seasons with the Minnesota Wild, and has played decently for the Ottawa Senators of late. He’s been battling injuries, but when he comes back, a change of scenery could spark Talbot back to old form. Why not do it in Pittsburgh?
Cam Talbot also offers cap flexibility for the "Pens" as his 3.66M AAV contract ends after this season. The return price for the Senators probably won’t be much more than the asking price for Reimer, should the Penguins be interested.
