The Chicago Blackhawks returned to winning ways by downing the New York Islanders 5-3 at United Center on Sunday afternoon in downtown Chicago.

Connor Bedard's goal late in regulation was the game-winner for the Blackhawks, who improved to 10-19-2 on the season while the Islanders fell to 12-13-7.

Both teams went back and forth in the opening 20 minutes. Ilya Mikheyev and Taylor Hall scored for the Blackhawks, while Ryan Pulock netted his first of the year for the Islanders.

At 2:25 of the second period, the Islanders knotted the score, thanks to Simon Holmstrom. Teuvo Terevainen, who's back in Chicago after several years with the Carolina Hurricanes, restored the Blackhawks' lead with a power play goal.

After Noah Dobson tied things up early in the third period as overtime loomed until Bedard struck with 56 seconds remaining in regulation:

Connor Murphy added an empty net goal to seal the deal for the Chicago Blackhawks. Ilya Sorokin made 18 saves for the Islanders in the loss, while Arvid Soderblom held the fort with 30 saves on 33 shots.

Three most impressive Chicago Blackhawks players in win over New York Islanders

#1 Connor Bedard

The former No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, Bedard had gone through the dreaded sophomore slump that multiple players endure.

However, he has two goals and three assists in his last three games. His goal came as a relief after he pivoted through the Islanders defense and took a centering pass, which he one-timed past Sorokin. The Islanders goaltender inadvertently helped the puck across the line when he fell back to the ice.

Bedard's frustrations were apparent, but his latest goal will help his confidence.

#2 Arvid Soderblom

While the Blackhawks were outshot, the young Blackhawks goaltender did his part to ensure that his teammates would have an opportunity to win.

Soderblom held the Islanders at bay during their third-period push to secure the go-ahead goal, which will help his confidence. Starter Petr Mrazek remains out with an injury, meaning the starting duties belong to Soderblom for now.

#3 Alex Vlasic

The Chicago Blackhawks blue liner contributed a pair of assists on Hall and Teravainen's goals while skating in a game-high 23:56 of ice time.

Vlasic, who had struggled with a -9 rating coming into the game, now has five total points in his last five games.
